Why we need immigrants
November 07, 2009 Saturday, 10:04 PM

SINGAPORE will go the way of the dinosaurs, without the influx of permanent residents and new citizens, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong warned on Saturday night.Making a compelling case for the need to take in more new immigrants, he trotted out various sets of figures to drive home the stark reality Singapore is facing: 'In the last 10 years, the number of people aged 65 and above has grown by about 100,000 while the number of children aged below 15 had shrunk by about 50,000.'

SM Goh and the other ministers need either a hearing aid, or a medical check-up to see if they are already having dementia that renders them incapable of comprehending simple concepts.

No idiot is saying that Singapore does not need immigrants. Of course Singapore does. Even the US needs immigrants! Even China and India need foreign talents. The issue is about whether we are getting too many of them and whether we are just pulling them in too promiscuously.

Has our civil servants and ministers gone around the streets, used the buses, taxis and MRT recently and seen the result of their policy of increasing the influx of new residents and citizens to our workplaces and to this little red dot?
I would estimate that on any day and time, we are now the minority, as the influx has become a flood.

Come now, overpaid policy makers and civil servants!! Please come down from your comfortable ivory towers and see what's happening on the ground before its too late. I am telling you that there are now too many immigrants here and that we are being overcrowded out of all our spaces and of our country.

It looks like the PAP's "open legs wide wide and bend forward" policy to FWs / FTs / PRs is not going to change after all, and we will face another tsunami influx of foreigners into Singapore after the next GE.

It is perhaps timely to remind fellow Singaporeans what we can expect from a MIW Government if we give our votes to them.

Herewith, please find a post by a Hardwarezone forumer Ixnay which says its all :

You voted for PAP, and you get to pay 7% GST instead of 5%.

You voted for PAP, and they peg power to the price of oil even when 80% of Singapore’s power comes from natural gas.

You voted for PAP and your CPF money gets lock up for another 3 years more than the original.

You voted for PAP, and your ministers demanded a 85% pay raises.

You voted for PAP, and your job went to a foreigner.

You voted for PAP, and your neighbors become foreigners.

You voted for PAP, and your elderly gets to enjoy the dignity of employment by cleaning toilets, scavenging trash bins for aluminum cans and selling tissue papers.

You voted for PAP, and your minsters tell you it is your fault that Mas Selemat escaped.

You voted for PAP, and your government would rather lose millions at sinking foreign banks rather than to save you from starvation.

You voted for PAP, and not only do your ministers literally spit on you, but their scions tell you to “get out of their elite uncaring faces”.

You voted for PAP, and you are amply rewarded with ERPs at your doorstep.

You voted for PAP, and Lee Hsien Loong pledged to fix the oppositions.

You voted for PAP, and you got a Division 3 Prime Minister who needs 2 mentors to hold his hand.

You voted for PAP, and you got a large serving of Mee Siam Mai Hum, at your own expense.

You voted for PAP, and your salary stayed stagnant for more than a decade while the cost of living shoot sky high.

You voted for PAP, and you see the foreign kids get a place in school while you child get zilch.

You voted for PAP, and you find that your public transport is no longer “public”.

You voted for PAP, and your ministers want to house 1,500 foreign workers right smacked in the middle of a peaceful neighborhood without any concerns for you.

You voted for PAP, and the government readily reward your men with more hookers than they can ever poked in Geylang.

You voted for PAP, and your government happily demands $5000 ang pao from you when your maid runaway or get pregnant even though you had nothing to do with it.

You voted for PAP, and your government glorify themselves with Olympic sized banners of their ghastly faces to scare away ghosts during the Chinese 7th month, courtesy of your S&C contribution to your town councils which is suppose to go toward making life in your neighborhood better.

You voted for PAP, and they protect the interests of the petrol companies by making you pump 3/4 tank before you cross the causeway.

You voted for PAP, and they see nothing wrong with fining you for driving a foreign registered car into Singapore.

You voted for PAP, and you discover that world-class super talented multi-million dollar minister with all the state resources and manpowers cannot even catch a limping man in this tiny island state
after more than half a year.

You voted for PAP, and you realise that your MP’s job is not to speak out for you in parliament, but to tell you to tighten the belt, bite the bullet, eat lesser and work longer.

You voted for PAP, and your kids have to stay with you till 40 years old, as they cannot afford the cheapest “public” housing.

You voted for PAP, and your government tells you that their interpretation of subsidies is the profit that they forgo making, instead of actually paying part of the cost.

You voted for PAP, and everyone in Singapore suddenly got elevated to Swiss standard of living, except you, and everyone around you.

You voted for PAP, and your neighbors can sell your home for you (en-block), whether you like it or not.

You voted for PAP, and your organs automatically belongs to the government (HOTA).

You voted for PAP, and you have to pay administration fee to use your own money when you are sick (Medisave).

You voted for PAP, and your sons get to spend 2 or more years as free labour in National Service and 13 more years as reservists, so that the foreigners can have a safe country to work in.

You voted for PAP, and you found out that each of your son is worth $30k, because that is what you are going to get if your son die while serving the foreigners.

You voted for PAP, and you get a grand party every year on 9th August celebrating more salaries for PAP.Not everyone is invited though, you will still have to ballot for it.

You voted for PAP, and they tell you that there is a corner called Hong Lim Park where you can go to talk all you want, other than that, shut up unless you have something nice to say.

You voted for PAP, and you get a world-bottom “nation-building” press serving you the latest propagandas, regardless of truth.

You voted for PAP, and in order to buy a car, you have to first pay for a piece of paper that cost more than the car itself.

You voted for PAP, and you must vote for PAP! You cannot even think about not voting for PAP. Because a certain inaccurate old man said that he will call in the army if you don’t.

So vote for PAP.

Read the list above again, and vote for PAP.

Go ahead, vote for PAP.

More good years eh ?? Vote for PAP.

For Swiss standard of living ?? Vote for PAP.

Yeah Dear Ministers please do not ignore that the HDB rental keep rising crazily, and causing more and more citizens moved to Condo while leaving their HDB to the immigrants. Consequently, Condo selling price keep rising bubbly and finally citizens will get hurt mostly.

It appears to me that SM, PM and its cabinet is still out of the touch with the grumblings and unhappiness on the ground of our local born Singaporeans.

Firstly, the problem of Singaporeans not reproducing enough was caused by our STOP at 2 policy in the early 1980’s.

Today we live with the consequences of that decision made in the past by trying to micro manages the birth rate of Singaporeans.

We are now blame solely for not reproducing enough, and hence the need to bring in new immigrants to make up for the lost “citizens” of the past.

I believe most Singaporeans see the need to bring in new immigrants as we cannot make good the mistakes of the past.

However most are unhappy because of the following:-

1. In the area of job opportunities, work permit holders and foreigners are preferred by employers because they do not fall under the Employment Act.

Hence even with foreign workers levy impose by the government, they are much cheaper to employ than local Singaporeans. This is happening to our low tier and middle tier wage workers.

The employers have found creative ways to circumvent MOM checks using phantom workers, mobile workers to minimize labor cost.

These foreign workers do not have to earn the kind of wages Singaporeans have to earn to feed their family in Singapore. They sent back 30- 60% of their wages to their home country which is enough to feed their family.

We cannot earn the kind of wages they are earning because it is simply not enough to feed our family let alone consider giving birth to a child in Singapore. Are we then being labeled as CHOOSY by some of our ministers which have upset most of us?

My personal opinion is that our ministers have lost touch with the ground.

For the higher skilled foreign workers in top management positions, most of them after being granted work permit will have a high preference to bring in their own skilled workers from their own country. Although many Singaporeans have similar skill or better skill sets, they form a minority in that department. where foreign top management heads that department.. The overall company foreign and local quota work force would still meet MOM requirements, except that we now have enclaves of foreign workers in specific departments where foreign top management can then have better control of their rice bowl and their staff.

2. Reservist :
There is no work disruption, if employers employ New Singaporeans, PRs, and Work permit holders. This already put Singaporeans at a disadvantage when applying for a job apart from the fact that we are more costly to employ.

3. Family and Work life balance :-
Most Singaporeans love their families. They work hard but not the long hours because they have elderly and young ones to take care of .

In comparison to a foreigner, most of them are living alone here. They can work long hours compared to a family man. The mere long hours put in by a foreigner contributes to a company’s productivity. As an employer, where cost of doing business is high, who would I prefer to employ.

4 Age Discrimination: We are somehow deemed to be slow, less productive, less teachable once we reach a certain age and hence the need to have wage cut through legislation. Are we then belittling our own local born Singaporeans in favor of younger, cheaper foreigners?

I have been unemployed for the past 6 years. I have given up looking for a job as many people in my category will know that it is very hard to find a job even if you have the right qualifications, experience and training. You need to have connections once you reach a certain age because you are no longer cheap to employ.

Foreigners come and go, wherever the grass is greener. Not may have allegiance and loyalty to our country judging by the number of converts to NEW Singaporeans. compared to PRs and Long Term Work permit holders.

I am not against foreigners working in our country. All I am asking is that, can we not ensure that:-

1. Employers do not favor cheap foreign labor over the more costly Singaporeans who have to feed their families in Singapore for the low and middle tier wage workers.

2. Foreign top management do not formed enclaves in employing only foreign skilled labor from their own country into our country. By allowing those to do so would result in top management talent holding the company at ransom.

This issue is not new as it has been with us for a long time. More often than not it was being brushed aside. I see it being addressed now to pacify the unhappiness of would be electorate. However I still not convince that the present government is really serious about addressing the concerns of Singaporeans.

We need to be selective in offering PRs or work permits to foreigners. Only those with talents which Singaporeans lack or those willing to do jobs shunned by Singaporeans can be chosen.

We must have the welfae of Singaporeans at heart. They must not face competition in securing jobs or using of facilties from foreigners. Just look at the % of unemployed Singaporeans & the crowded MRT trains!

We understand that we have to make up for the fall in birth rate, but not in this manner.

The LHL must follow Emperor Qian Long style, Disguie as a commoner and mindle aroung with the public at the coffeeshop and put on your hearing aid and listen to the first hand real life.
Than you will get the truth real feedback of your Singaporean.
By relying feedback from your Yesman grassroot boss carrier man will only have the positive side.
Never will the negative side be revealed as they wouldn't dare hurt your pride with the poor policies imposed by you.
Change while there is still time before the next GE
