THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) has turned down a marine company's application to be the seventh taxi operator here.
Tiong Asia Marine, which repairs, paints and cleans boilers for the shipping industry, applied in May, despite signs that the market was overcrowded.

I am very grateful if any db friends can tell me about this kind of taxi charges. I boarded a Comfort taxi on 1Nov (saturday) at 6pm at Fortune Center going to Golden Landmark hotel. It was raining heavily then that is why I took a taxi. It has 2 meters running. One is showing $3 and the other smaller meter is showing $4. My total fare came up to $8.65. Why is there 2 meters running at the same time?

FengFeiFei,

vely simpler lah,

1) $3.00 on larger part of meter - flag down fare.

2) $4.00on smaller part of meter - $3.00 CBD surcharge and
$1.00 peak period surcharge (35% of $3.00 in larger part of meter)

3) $1.75 is running charge plus 35% peak period surcharge.

so, big part is flag down & running fare and small part is extras charges.

Confusing?, I as Taxi driver also sometime "liat bo kiu" but just follow law lor.

You want better explains, maybe better to ask LTA or Taxi company.

Hope have give you some idea and not so blur, blur anymore.

LTA should not protect the taxi companies to let them maximise profit.
The new taxi will come with a bang cheap and simple.
$2.00 flag down 10 cents every 100m
$2.00 booking charges
No peak hour charges
No 30 % peak charges
No CBD take off charges
No price fixing
Normal 50% midnight charges
All these will wake up every other taxi company.

If buses do not pay ERP charges then why are taxi commuters to bear ERP charges. If we waive ERP and all the do-not-make-sense charges , then the cost of riding cabs will go down, demand will go up, then we increase supply......... that way there will be less cars on the road as there are lots of taxis availiable as in all major cities in the world.

We can always mandate taxi companies to operate at different time of the day to ensure that supply and demand meet peak and off-peak time slot. With all the ERP infrastructure, we are now able to track all our taxis cheaply.

Kokoobird, you may have something there. Consider this, singapore is afterall surrounded by water. Why not have a water taxi license. We can have many drop off jetty points around our island and it also helps to save on travelling and you get to avoid all the ERPs and traffic on land if for instance you need to go from east to west for example.

Interesting idea and concept!! LTA should try to explore this....
