Don't penalise PRs for holding on to roots
November 03, 2009 Tuesday, 03:32 AM

I REFER to Mr Francis Ngiam's comments in last Saturday's collation of views ('Your insights') about the distinction between citizens and permanent residents (PRs).

PRs are just long-term workers...not as probational Singapore citizens. So we MUST distinct the difference and with visable treatment as well. Perhaps include income ceiling for PRs to buy HDB resale flats and less benefits....our current PR scheme is more that for "probational Singapore citizens" - and we must set a deadline for them to convert...just like in Australia and etc.

Where are the roots of this young man when he has lived 19 out of his 20 years in Singapore, I wonder.

He may not have one, yet. People are free to decide where to "root" themselves.
If not, we'll all be squeezing in the same spot in Africa.

probably his father ensured that he was not born in singapore to be a citizen here automatically but alas being a 2nd generation PR, he still need to serve NS and no running away......his father is the cause of so many unhappy citizens here regarding the PR issue and his father is bringing bad reputation to all other PRs in singapore

nothing is permanent in singapore anyway, and the PR is determined by the duration of the stamp on the passport - one or five or 10 years max.....so all hooha for nothing

It is fair to point out that PRs are not automatically eligible for citizenship - even if they have remained PRs for many decades. There is a clear distinction between the two categories.

Just because someone is a PR and not a citizen does not automatically mean that they have declined the option of citizenship - it may be something not offered or available to them.

Many people are quiet now but if the writer had an indian sounding name, then the forum would be full of venom. Kudos!

Hi,
A few of my reservist friends are Malaysian but they chose to do the NS as this is one of the ways to get the PR status. To my understanding, in order to get PR status, one needs at least 'O' levels, $1,500 salary and working here for at least 3 years. At least our author has served his nation, what is there to fuss about?

Hi,
wrong choice of words, should be "our author has served our nation". Sorry!

I think we are missing something here ?

Mingsuny mentioned "reservist Malaysian PR Friends", the Writer says his 20yrs old and spent 19years as ,probably ,a small school going kid in a Singapore Primary School thru to College here.

Its an indication of the PAST, VERY , "STRICT" immigration /migration rules set by previous Generation of Policy Holders.

I remembered, One of the Condition was to Mandatory work in Singapore for a 3 yrs length of time..

So to Mingsuny Friends and the Writer, your National Service was also a "Mandatory" pre conditioned then to obtaining a PR status.

I think, if after 20 yrs and you still hve "reservations", after "receiving" almost "18 yrs of precious learning and living opportunities in Singapore" ....tells me that you are chosing the "Two Door" option for your future ---One Door, to continue and enjoy and take advantage of the privileges ,so easily avaialble...and the Second Door - for your emergency escape.

You make it sound like it was so noble of you to serve NS ------- I really doubt is was a Voluntary Move by you.
