Singapore's public transport lags behind Hong Kong's
November 02, 2009 Monday, 05:43 AM

THERE is no real competition in the public transport sector in Singapore, unlike in Hong Kong where the companies running bus, minibus and train services compete for the same pool of passengers.

"When will SBS Transit realise a point-to-point service is essential?"

They did... it's a cab :)

Btw, the fewer seats is to give standing room greater comfort. :(

The concept of private sector participation in a public good such as transport is problematic.

The private sector will not 'cross-subsidize' services which are not profitable but are necessary for the social good, maybe some feeder bus or other services will be restricted. The impact on a holistic approach, where the train and bus systems are integrated is real. It becomes much more difficult for planners to take such a holistic approach.

The UK experience of privatizing the rail system has been terrible for consumers. Global experience in privatizing public transport is mixed - not necessarily a resounding success.

There iwas no objections by authorities that we lag behind H.K.

So they probably know so , and will have to find a way to improve our transport system soon..

There's actually "fake" competitions in the whole bussiness circle in SG.Take the bus and taxi companies as a example.SMRT,SBS transit the main operators of the public bus system and they operate on different routes and very rare they cross each other turf, where is the competion when fares are identical to last item?
The taxi companies are the same even the companies' names, colour of the taxis, made of cars, etc. The fares, surcharges, etc are identical, what competiotns are we talking about?
Competitions exists when the different companies offering the same services or items at different prices and different termsto their prospective customers.

M'sia's Transport Minister joins morning rush

He did it to better understand commuters' problems.

Fri, Nov 06, 2009
The Star/Asia News Network

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat joined the morning rush on the KTM Komuter and Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems to better understand commuters' problems.

He took the KTM Komuter from the Bank Negara station to KL Sentral, then boarded the LRT to Bangsar.

During the ride, Ong spoke to passengers and listened to their feedback on how to further improve the urban public transport system.

At a press conference later, Ong said the waiting time for LRT trains will be reduced from three minutes to two once six new trains became operational next month.

Ong added that another challenge was to cut the KTM Komuter waiting period.
