WASHINGTON: US President Barack Obama yesterday signed legislation adding homosexuals to the list of groups covered by federal hate-crime law, in the biggest expansion of such protection in decades.
this law was named after two people who were tortured and killed based on hate, one because of the colour of his skin and one because of his sexuality. it gives the american authorities the power prosecute those who commit hate-crimes. i find it difficult to understand how anyone can oppose a law that makes it a crime to attack, torture or kill someone simply because of who and what they are, but i’m sure the hate-mongers and fundamentalists will.
gays are traditionally the victims of hate crimes, not the perpetrators of them.
I wonder who these 'gay militants' were, who supposedly threatened Dr Thio Li-ann's life previously. The threat would surely have been a dumb move, as it would have increased the hate towards themselves( ie. the gays).
This is NOT a new federal law. President Obama just added another lobby group (of his supporters) to the list.
It is a pity that the "hate-crime" law doesn't apply to those people, who have been killed, assaulted, illegally detained, etc.; because they looked like "terrorists".
GhostRider666, as far as i know the alleged "gay miliants" are just that -- alleged. i've never heard of gays attacking homophobes, only homophobes attacking gays.
the homophobes go into panic mode anytime their "right" to freely attack gays is threatened. but they need not worry...here in singapore we’re likely to remain firmly in the dark ages for the foreseeable future.
Eagler2004 - that's just hogwash. What gay agenda? There's never been any gay agenda. Gays are the victims. Always has been throughout history. Haters persecuting gays = we've heard and seen it happen so many times. Have you ever heard or seen a gay person attacking a bible carrying homophobe?
It is high time gays are accorded certain rights to defend themselves against more hate mongering.
