Online attacks: Minister rues lack of self-policing
February 05, 2009 Thursday, 05:05 AM

WHEN MP Seng Han Thong was set on fire by a Yio Chu Kang resident last month, he drew many online attacks that were vicious.

As in real life, you can't stop people from being bigoted, or idiots, who tend to multiply themselves like mozzies.

And the minister must, although he shouldn't at all, be taken aback by the anti-govt rhetoric - yes, rhetoric. Just bec people disagree with you doesn't make them less than you, in terms of maturity or whatever. To believe otherwise is the most obvious sign of immaturity.

Oh! So, maturity = ??? Is it = +ve comments only? = no criticism? = full support for gahmen?

If you’ve that maturity in you, you’d have just ignored what you dislike to see!!!

Already no freedom of speech! Don’t tell me there’s gonna be no freedom to type even!!!

Aiyoh, MINIstar ah, you mean your PAP internet brigade is overwhelmed with work meh? How come they did not "regulate" those mean comments?

Anyway, if not many comes to the defence of your poor colleague who got attacked, it can mean one or more of these things:

1) Most people agree with the "vicious" insensitive attacks.
2) Most people are too lazy to rebut even if they disagree with the people in (1)
3) Most people don't freaking care about this. What makes an attack of a MP so special that everyone should rally around him? Unless they are colleagues, friends etc.

But the most important is, who the hell cares?! The internet is a cesspool of filth and flaming (heh) wars. To even engage (in the form of rebutting) with the flamers is to give them legitimacy. But don't take my word for it lah, go to www.sammyboy.com and try to self-regulate those people over there.

ps: Why do I get the sneaking suspicion that your idea of self-regulate is to rebut all those who speak ill of the government?

To Kampongkid, ahbohling

You people amaze me by how readily and willingly you prove the point of this article. Your anti-government attitude towards life has taken over your mind and clouded your judgement. Truly, you demonstrate the lack of basic compassion for a victim whose only fault was that he joined a political party not favoured by you. It shows what kind of upbringing you two have. Truly disgusting. I hope your parents are proud of you.

Attacking (govt) policies (or even individuals) is one thing, but to make fun of someone who may have lost his life is, in my opinion, not something a decent human being should stoop to.

just to set the record right, any form of attack is wrong, no violence should be tolerated anywhere. However, with pages like this, it is to allow freedom of speech, and this is probably the only place you'll see alot of honest opinions, not just that is pro - anybody. There might be some inappropriate comments, but this is what it really is ... FREEDOM OF SPEECH..

Today's perpetrator could be tomorrow's victim. WOW

Freedom of speech to say whatever's on your mind at any time about anyone else. The web is the greatest opportunity for the dissemination of information that has ever existed for mankind. It offers the broadest range of communication. It is also the place where gossip reigns most freely.

Actually, you lack of comprehension skills amazed me, as is your willingness to bring my mother and father into the picture (by the way, they are immensely proud of me).

The crux of my point is (and I quote) "But the most important is, who the hell cares?! The internet is a cesspool of filth and flaming (heh) wars. To even engage (in the form of rebutting) with the flamers is to give them legitimacy".

I called those who have made fun of the MP flamers. I feel sorry for him, as I feel sorry for countless others who suffer unnecessarily. I don't come to the defence of so many other victims who have been mocked on the internet (e.g. I remembered people scolding the parents of the underaged kid who drove and died in an accident). There will always be flamers and meanness in the internet, GET OVER IT.

Why should the MP be anything special?
