Once-clean neighbourhood now has litter strewn everywhere

I REFER to last Wednesday's online letter by Madam Yuki Chan, 'No longer a cosy park for residents'.

Workable or not, at least you make the effort to come up with some suggestions.

Zhiqiang,

I agree with what you said. I think the government should pay more attention and be more sensitive to the rights of Singapore citizens. With the influx of so many foreign labor in recent years, Singaporeans have been tolerating. It's an eye sore to see so many of them hanging around our parks. Makes you wonder who are the locals here owning the place.

It is also a stupid dumb idea to build foreign labour dormitories around our residential areas. I think the safety of residents nearby are being put at stake. As a lady, I won't even dare to go jogging around my neighborhood if there's a dormitory nearby. The social security of residents are being put on risk. By the time something happens, it's already too late!
Some of these foreign labour might also bring in diseases such as the Chikunkunya virus, which started spreading from some Indian workers who came to Singapore. Residents staying nearby are hence being put at risk too, in terms of health issues. And don't tell me about health checks done before these foreign labor came. MOH can't guarantee 100% checked and safe. It just takes one mistake for it to happen. Just like the melamine case, AVA only got to find out so many products are contaminated with melamine after the outburst in China. What does this show, I guess it's really obvious.

Since we are the residents here, our best interest should be put before the convenience of deploying lodging for foreign labor. For those MPs who don't think it's an issue, it's cos they don't stay there in normal residential places. Why not built behind their own backyard.

These foreign labor dormitories should be built far away from the residential areas. We pay a high price for our HDB flats and our consent should be sought before building such things. We can be accommodating, but that does not mean it is necessary to sacrifice our rights as the residents and citizens of this country. They are here to earn a living, and we try to be humanitarian. But that does not mean at the expense of our rights and spoil them!

I lived overseas for 5 years previously. Fortunately, my host country did not discriminate me or even suggesting that we are banned from their parks and shopping centres. The writer must note that hundred of thousands of Singaporeans worked overseas and if we do not treat our foreign workers well, they can do the same to us.

The views of the writer is selfish, self-centred and probably someone who cannot see the bigger world and a frog in a well.

betterment, think your statement is unfair. Were you overseas as blue or white collar. Which country/city did you go that allow foreigners to congregate by the hundreds/thosands at their main parks every weekends?

Workers are treated even much worse off in other countries (including developed nations) than Singapore, that they must remain out of sight expect in statistics. Just ask any of the workers...

essentially the same story replayed countless times.

to sum it up; first world country, third world mentality.

don't worry, we'll get there one day, someday.

betterment,

I guess people are referring to foreign labors, not the expats like what you were when you were overseas. We are referring to those Indian, Bangladeshi workers if I am not wrong; Those from the dormitories. Not the higher class more educated foreign talents.

It's unfair for you to call people such names, and made it as if you are soooooooo accommodating and noble. Hypocrite.

If these foreign workers do not behave and dirty our parks, or even your void decks, we can't just endure right?
And since when anyone suggesting banning them?

"Most of us are ready to accept the presence of foreign workers within our neighbourhood. But I feel there should be more sensitivity towards residents' rights instead of just asking them to be more accommodating. There is a limit as to how much we can accommodate their presence."

Read this paragraph again before saying anything, MR. NOBLE.
Don't anyhow shoot ok. Detest such idiot like you. Maybe someone like you is more suitable to work overseas, and be a global bullfrog.

Litter bugs and society's pailei.

They are products of our schools since 1965 as our educational systems are not churning our brilliant youth but many spoilt brats from both rich and poor families alike.

What is Complete Education?

Those who want to know what is Gratitude Practice, please google 'Glad Game' or "Pollyanna".

Ministry of Environment and Water Resources

Do they know all the places where littering is rampant 24/7?

Do they have a website for concerned citizens to be their eyes to give them the information and photos?

For a start, the P.Sec of this Ministry should visit Geylang [not for the girls] but look into the filthy and smelly drains.

it would be more constructive and mature if we debate the points put forth rather than resort to name-calling.
