MP burnt, sent to SGH
January 11, 2009 Sunday, 03:58 PM

MR SENG Han Thong, MP for Yio Chu Kang, was rushed to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) on Sunday afternoon for burn wounds after a man hurled a flammable liquid at him.
The Straits Times understands that Mr Seng was burnt on his face, neck and back.
The suspect, who is believed to have thrown the liquid at Mr Seng, 58, while he was at a grassroots event at Yio Chu Kang commmunity club, has been arrested.

I am flabbergasted by michaelpek's comment.

Whether or not one agrees with PAP policies, there is no justification for commiting unprovoked violence against a fellow human being.

I pray for Mr. Seng's quick recovery to his face, neck and back, and from the trauma inflicted by someone who must have lost his mind, could not control his anger and must take it out on another human being. What a disgrace. :(

Shame on you Michealpek for making such inhuman and unjustified remark!

This is indeed shocking news, and I do not condone such attacks. However, I must say that I have never expected this to happen in Singapore, as I have always thought that Singaporeans were a meek lot.

Let's not jump to any conclusions about this attack. That attacker could've been a gangster who is used to attacking anybody that doesn't give in to his wishes, or he could've been a lunatic, or he could've commited this as revenge over a personal matter between him and the MP.

In any case, this issue should highlight one important issue. Have we been assuming that attacks on our govt leaders such as this and assassinations would never happen? It's time we reviewed our security measures for our leaders?

Citizen asking for help n if MPs cant help then who the Citizen go to ?? just like the example of that taxi driver that get a punch in the pass. later on he get back his licence and get scack by the Taxi company so is a balack market also. is as good as he did not help .

IF one MP or MPs cant manage please ask for a change that all we need to know.

So it is not always red carpets, roses, VIP treatment and honour to be an MP. You can also be 'fired.' But the tragic fact remains many MPs conduct the meet the people session out of compulsion and with much unwillingness. They donot understand the seriousness of the demand of individual citizens. No doubt there are many citizens to satisfy. MPs should learn to lend a patient ear and do take all sincere attrempts to address the issues.

A very unfortunate incident.

Hope the lesson is not lost on the govt.

No, not that more security measures should be taken. How could an MP function effectively if topmost in his mind is his nagging distrust of the very citizens he is supposed to represent and interact with directly?

Politicians are not a special breed of 'super civil servants', faceless, yet wielding powers that decide the lives and living environment of citizens. It is an 'occupational hazard' MPs and politicians must be prepared to face as they cannot operate remotely and yet be credible to thier constituents. There are many, many examples worldwide - Bush being shoed, and more tragically, Bhutto assasinated etc.

The lesson for local MPs is that their days as rubber stamps in parliament is fast fading. Those who can't take the heat should be thinking of making a fast if not graceful retreat from the kitchen!

Our society should not condone such act; no rationale to attack another human in such a way.

Why not to Mount E? We have better equipment and specialists there.
