Hit-and-run at church: Residents sick of rude drivers
January 09, 2009 Friday, 06:30 AM

I READ with interest and concern Wednesday's article, 'Car hits volunteer in church, then speeds off'. It does not surprise me that another incident involving people driving to or from the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour in Siglap Hill has occurred. Long-suffering residents along this road have had to suffer, not infrequently, the antics of some impatient and inconsiderate, if not downright rude, churchgoers on their way to or from Mass.

Wah? Go to church with this type of attitude. I would say that I am ashamed of being a Christian.

Traffic rules apply to ALL, even if resident park their vehicles outside their house on public roads along enforcement lines, or causing obstruction to others, there is no excuse...and should be subjected to summon by relevant authority.

Indeed some of these ugly so-called churchgoers ought to be rightfully dealt with. In the case of OLPS, there have always been some very inconsiderate parishioners who continually defy good order - for their own selfish convenience, they ignore clear instructions (and some times on-the-spot directions by the church "volunteers") to entering or leaving the church compound by the correct routes thus leading to traffic jams and worst, jumping queue to park their vehicles while others observe the prescribed procedures. In the case of this hit-and-run incident, it is surprising to note the occupants of the big and posh vehicle did not have the moral conscience and legal duty to get down and assist the volunteer who was hit and even attempted to "run down" the volunteer. Their "escape" from the scene of the incident tells a lot about their mentality towards others, particularly their fellow churchgoers. I am a parishioner of OLPS and am terribly embarrassed by these black sheep. . What a wanton act on the part of this car's occupants - especially on Christmas Day, the birth of their religious founder! The church should take more concrete efforts to SHAME these unprincipled members of the flock while the law should come down hard on them given the hit-and-run "disease" is becoming more rampant in Singapore

Singaporean is renowned for their kiasu-ness, being a christian doesnt make them a saint, so ugly immoral behavior is still expected from minority of them. I remember couple yrs ago, a resident fromthe same church neighbourhood had enough of churchgoers parking right outside his gate (blocking his car), he actually stormed into the church and made a scene in the middle of the mass. I dont blame him for that, the poor guy actually have to go thro same thing every weekend for so many yrs, which is like tickling time bomb...

To churchgoers, pls park sensibly and considerate to others.

Don't jump to conclusion yet. Some of the cars parked there may not belong to the church members.

The good impression of a Christian behavior given to me by my Christian school mate during my school day is totally different from what the writer has described. How come har?

I can already see anti-Christians entering this forum to attack believers over a minority of blacksheep. Not all churchgoers are Christians and not all who park in and around churches are members or Christians for that matter. Almost all church carparks do not charge for parking so many drivers take advantage to leave their cars there or in the estate nearby. Some cars may belong to residents and their visitors so don't take the opportunity to attack Christians because of a few errant motorists who park in the vicinity of OLPS.
