Work as long as you can
January 08, 2009 Thursday, 12:22 PM

CONTINUE working for as along as you can.
This is the advice from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to older and retired Singaporeans, who he said should stay active and engaged as they can still contribute much to the workforce and community.
But to support older workers, many social attitudes and institutional structures established when life expectancies were shorter and Singapore's population was younger will have to change, said Mr Lee, pointing out that by 2030, one-fifth of the population will be 65 years and older.

Perhaps a physicist in youth and a road sweeper in old age? To continue working is good, but the work has got to be meaningful. Seniors should not be used as substitute for cheap labour.

isno ~ Glibism your addiction? If there's nothing wrong with starting as a sweeper and becoming a high-brow professional (physicists don't impress me) - why not the reverse when life comes full circle? Are you face/status obsessed?

Is it more meaningful to twiddle your thumbs or spend indulgently/unreplenishingly versus working if just to earn your keep doing whatever you can get? Youths too, should'nt be exploited as cheaper labour to replace 'overpaid' experienced seniors?

Some people are weird. They can't mind their own business. Why should they be so affected that I should choose to do nothing but twiddle thumbs?

isno 04:58 ~ Address me directly - what're you afraid of if you have a decent point to make - unless you don't? If you want to mind only your own business, why participate in a DB that's meant for comments - not only of your personal matters? Don't flatter yourself mispresuming the questioning of your smug definition of 'meaningful work' as concern. Do you need to be 'concerned' with anyone whose smug glibness provokes comment?

ugs 07:56 ~ Another presumptuous misogynist - in a blind herd of smug presumers - on the bandwagon? Ad hominem comments imply you've no confidence or substance to debate? Read the title : Is this thread about work or me?

it has been stated that of those between 44 and 61 years of age 49% have secondary education, 19% have primary education, 8% have no formal education. that makes it 76 % of the population having secondary and below. it is very much doubted that they can manage the present day cost of living with their earning power given their education.
