January 07, 2009 Wednesday, 09:04 AM

IN A shock move, Singapore Flyer general manager Steven Yeo - the public face of the attraction since the Dec 23 incident which left 173 people trapped on the giant observation wheel for six hours - has resigned.
He tendered his resignation on Monday, giving six months' notice.

I am surprised that ST described this as a shock announcement.
The question should have been.. how did he last that long in the job?
The other question is....did he jump or was he pushed?
If he jumped...then it was a smart move.
Still, he will get a six month (pay) hongbao....just in time for chinese new year.

Usually public is unaware about what really goes on behind closed management doors of any private or non-private organization. Whatever we read or think about it, is most probably speculation.
But it seems that stepping down from the (sometimes, not sure in this case) highly paid position (high because of the responsibility ?!) in times of a crisis, solves the problem. Scapegoating someone, voluntary or forced, and everything is alrighty ?
Interesting enough (in general), highly paid management people are always escaping responsibility by stepping down and taking their x months extra cash.
Would not be surprised, if tomorrow someone announce the GM was responsible for not putting certain xyz measures and precautions in place.

Good management skills shows, if shi.. happens and you deal with it !

Remark: The "stepping/get stepped down thing" is a worldwide practice, so refer from discussing this is Singapore style.

Newspaper report always put things in very presentable and tasteful manner. Even if he is forced to leave or an ugly spat between parties have taken place, these dirty linens are never washed in public. When negative events happened, heads have to roll and someone somewhere have to bear the departure. Why leave a five-figure pay job like this ? This is a dream job, pays damn well as long as it turns. He fills big shoe, so the publicity. If an employee who earns peasant's pay gets the sack, he leaves with no fanfare in the papers. No matter what your pay is, at the end of the day we are all digits that is easily replacable and forgotten.

For Singapore Flyer, they are insured against the losses when the wheel stops operation these big organization they have nothing to loss.
The Tenants there are the worse hits, missing the X’mas and New Year Grand event.
The revenues losses are more than 80%.
Now, the rentals in most places in Singapore have gone down in this recession.
Singapore Flyer being a tourist attraction the revenues is based on tourists.
The number of tourist arriving Singapore Flyer and human traffic flow is not enough to sustain the daily operation. Unlike in Raffles city or Orchard the places are packed with consumer spending for the X’mas , New Year and coming Chinese New Year.
Yet, the rental for the shop space is sky high compare to these places.
Are the Singapore Flyer Management ready to lower to rental to help out the tenant there.
What I notice is that some of the shop have closed down and the whole places is what was described previously as a “ghost town” or “staffs outnumber visitors”
Wonder how long the shops there will survives or they will move out all at together?

pis 12:53 ~ Meaning, the prices weren't 'steep' until you learnt the top four guys were Caucasian - or if they had been Asians instead? Asians are known for pricing things lower than Caucasians despite economic logic?
