Flyer turning again but with no riders
January 02, 2009 Friday, 06:59 AM

NINE days after the Singapore Flyer came to a grinding halt, the world's largest observation wheel started turning again at 6pm yesterday - although without any passengers on board.

Stand up, pray tell the truth now. Did you miss the fact that the Flyer(which cannot fly) was not turning?
Did it affect your enjoyment of the many other interesting things to see in Singapore?
If the truth be know, the Flyer has been more of a joke and an expensive one at that, too.
As we say..next!!!
But one's heart goes out to the tenants at the Flyer whose biz is now nil. Although it must be said that they should hve thought long and hard before beginning this "lost" venture.

Make it truly safe. No more this drama and blunder as it affects confidence.

Then issue advance tickets to Singaporeans at $20 each for two rides per year duing off peak season.

The revenue from tourists will be the cream.

I hope the Singapore Flyer will turn again. Then the entire ASEAN region can boast of many unique attractions i.e. Singapore with the largest wheel in the world, Malaysia with the tallest 'twin' towers (second or third tallest building), Thailand with lovely beaches and Islands, Cambodia with the ancient ruins and history.

Tourism in ASEAN should be promoted as an Asian adventure, not any one Asian country being better than their neighbours and the Flyer could be Singapore's main contribution.

I wonder how many folks like myself are glad that we did not try the Flyer with our elderly parents. Imagine if my 80-year-old mother was with me and she needed to use the toilet, she would not be able to wait for 6 hours to do that. Imagine then the trauma she would have to endure and the possibility of embarrassing herself in the company of strangers. And imagine her being required to be lowered through the use of a rope from a height of over 100 metres in the buffeting winds.

I find it hard to believe that anyone could be in such serious lack of common sense to think that common folks can find it acceptable to be lowered by a rope from such a height. We are not commandos. Even seasoned commandos would not classify such feats as trivial.

We remember when our ministers did a demo swim in our Singapore River following its clean-up to show that the water is safe for swimming. Perhaps we should get our ministers and their parents on the Flyer and have them brought to the ground using those ropes to show that it is safe to do so.

I know it is easy to laugh over such poor safety backup procedures, but it is indeed laughable to hear about the Flyer having two sets of motors but then forget about two sets of power systems. Without electrical power, even having ten sets of motors is of no use. Maybe all of us miss something here.

Before the Flyer is declared safe, I would strongly suggest that an open house be arranged where members of the public are invited to view the safe-guards and to have the Flyer team be on-hand to answer questions. As of now, it is clear that whichever authority is responsible for the safe running of the Flyer is not smart enough to do its job. Let the public grill the Flyer team and uncover any weak links in the system.

I would also like to hear why the Flyer is deemed safe when even something so elementary as a short-circuit cannot be avoided. In this day and age, one would think that anyone with a basic training in electricity would know how to avoid a short-circuit. Furthermore, one would also expect such possibilities would have been eradicated when inspected by an average professional engineer.

For unaffected folks like me, it is a joke. Build the tallest observation wheel, then let folks rappel down. This is a case of ambition running ahead of ability.

Is that a backup mechanism in place that can bring the capsules down without having to rely on electricity? If not, the risk of being trapped up there for 6 hours or more is still there. And what's the point of all those assurances?

The approval is in the hands of the authorities.

They better know their job well.

well, the owner of the wheel has now said that it must be proven no risk before taking in passengers....it shows that prior to this fiasco, there was no contingency plan for evacuation when system fails.....hope there will be nothing similar to the bangkok night club fire

The authorites must get it tested beyond doubt before giving the approval.

Not to do so is shirking responsibility.

Interesting that the Chairman of the Singapore Flyer( that does not fly) said..there are other intersting things to do at the Flyer inspite of the fact that the flyer is not operating.
What ..may we ask..is there..but a few eateries..that ..aint nuffin to write home about?
And then..what else?
Is it time..someone put there hand up and admit that its siting is a bad choice, its too expensive and there is absolutely nuffin to do..there. Plus the sheer lunacy that it was built without enough safety features to prevent the embarrassing mess its i right now. Plus..they even forgot to to look in to fengshui..before it was even built. Today, the gods of happiness cannot help ..even with it turning the other way round. When something is bad..its bad. Short of a miracle..and they are far and few between.....the Flyer will bleed to a stop..sometime in the near future. Sad..but true.
A pity..because it was begun so horribly wrong from the very beginning.
Still..its only throwing money..into the flowing water in the Marina Barrage.
