SMOKERS in Singapore have even fewer places to enjoy a puff now, as a nationwide ban on lighting up in a new list of public areas took effect yesterday.

I do not think smokers need worry unduly. Just like the previous ban, they will be free to continue their favourite past time in these same places in about 3 months.
This ban is just another futile esercise. The NEA has yet to be successful in stopping smoking in places previously banned, like In the lift, at designated non smpking outdoor refreshment areas of coffeeshops and hawker centers and at the bus-stops.
100 officers for the whole of Singapore and only for this blitz is simply a joke. After this grace period, they will return to their previous non existant numbers (probably zero after office hours).
Perhaps, straitstimes ought to stake one of these places out to see what I mean. It wouldn't be difficult, just go to the coffeeshop at block 25 Upper Changi road, especially on wednesdays, weekends and football season, as punters of the nearby betting outlets gather at the non smoking areas of the coffeeshop which is nearest to the outlet, to puff away.
By the way, does anyone remember any news report regarding smoking in banned areas after the enactment of the previous ban, besides a similar public blitz to issue friendly reminders?.....I didn't think so.

Singapore can be so strict with smoking and yet cannot do anything stopping the use of plastic bags. This shows how much Singaporeans really are. Anything not to their advantage personally, they will complain like crazy. Having a better health and life but yet no saving or contributing to the environment. Whats the point?

It's a wonder there is such strict rules about smoking in specific areas, but when I was on board the river cruise during New Year's eve, tourists were allowed to smoke on board. The cruise's crew weren't much bothered about it either. Perhaps this rule only applies to locals?

One one hand, you want to attract tourists by building Casinos which you know is not a healthy passtime. On the other hand, you limit smoking to such a large extent to dissuade tourists from coming. What a double standard. I think I know why, gambling although is bad, can help garmen earn money, so it's ok. Smoking on the other hand, has no advantage to the garmen, so scrap it. It's all about money making.

clhc,

Plastic bags are one of the by-products from refining fossil oil and they can be recycled to be used to dispose of other gabbage like leftover food and so on rather than just a carrier for your supermarket purchases. On the other hand, cigarettes, cigars, etc., come from processing of tobacco leaf and other plants including the paper that wraps each cigarette, the paper pack that contained the sticks, the plastic wrapper that protect the paper pack, the paper carton to put all those cigarette packs for easy transportation and so on.

Growing of tobacco leaf is enviromentally unfriendly. It uses land that should have been used to grow food to feed the hungry millions rather than the addicted millions. If anyone can survive only on smoking and not eating, then all of us just need to smoke and not eat. And the toxic smoke generates from tobacco smoking is detrimental to everyone, smokers and non-smokers who happen to be in close proximity. This is well documenated. What saving can smoking contibute to the environment other than polluting the air with no sensible functionality nor utility.

Simply put, smoking is a no-brainer economic activity and non-smokers must be protected from the ill effect of tobacco smoke. As for diehard smokers, they will reap what they sow. Its a question of sooner or later.

I think the gamen should ban eggs as well. Because egg yoke contains high level of cholesterol which will cause heart attack. In addition, if you eat eggs in front of people, you might affect the health of other people as well because you will cause temptation to the other person to try. So, all in all, ban egg yoke?

jackiechan88,

If you eat too much eggs or fatty meat, it affects only you and only you get heart attack. You can be assured that those who are eating heathily and exercise regularly do not get your cholesterol even if you sit next to them unlike tobacco smoke.

As to your statement of causing temptation to others by eating eggs in front of them and therefore ban egg yoke? You okay? Hope those toxic smoke has not gone into and affected your brain?
