And then there were Three, or Big Four without Arsenal?
December 28, 2008 Sunday, 05:21 AM
As the year turns and England's Premier League season enters its second half, has it shrunk to a three-horse race or expanded to five?

In my humble opinion, the EPL has always been a 2-horse race, during the past 4 seasons, between Man Utd & Chelsea. Liverpool & Arsenal only made up the so-called Big 4 owing to their mega financial resources, & huge war chest to recruit & retain the world's most talented footballers. Arsenal, owing to their huge outlay on the Emirates Stadium, are no longer in the same league as the Big 3, but they should try to work on the shoestring budget at places like Everton, Hull City, Stoke etc. Arsene Wenger still has the money to make bids for stars such as Xabi Alonso - something the likes of Everton can only dream about.

The EPL will continue to be dominated by the Big 4, & won by either Man Utd or Chelsea, because the majority of referees continue to favour these wealthy & influential clubs, when they play the less fashionable teams.
Stoke City were on the receiving end of some nasty challenges, including an elbow from Wayne Rooney, which went unpunished by the referee, the other day. However, a Stoke defender was sent off for a strong challenge. Playing an expensively assembled Man Utd is difficult enough, but having to contain them with only 10 players & a referee which favoured the Red Devils, was too much of a mountain to climb for Stoke, who eventually lost 0-1.

during the past 4 seasons, between Man Utd & Chelsea <---- this is going to change, isn't it? It is a 3 horse race now...not 2.

yes it does look like it will be a 3 horse race for now - but anything can happen and both villa & the gunners are within striking position should the big 3 falters though personally I think is will be difficult as the big 3 will be moving into higher gear and will try to move ahead of each other ...

As the season goes into its final lap, the Big 3 should pull further ahead of their opponents, who have vastly smaller squads. The bitter winter months & heavier pitches will claim more players through fatigue, injuries & suspensions from mis-timed tackles. However, Liverpool may lack the consistency for another sustained challenge on the EPL trophy.

Can any of their reserve team beat the kampong and hamlet teams?
Buy Div 1 not Div 3 players, who cannot even beat the hamlet and kampong teams.

I doubt if the FAS will succeed in recruiting Division 1 footballers to takeup S'pore citizenship. Those of top division calibre are plying their trade in Europe, I'm afraid.

I do not have in mind the top of the top in Div 1.
The lower level of Div 1 will do.
Or the top of Div 2.
Div 3? They cannot beat the kampong and hamlet teams with heavy legs unable to turn fast and in the air due to lack of fitness. They are bulky and fat, like playing holiday soccer but paid as professionals but not playing like true professionals should. Their standard of play showed up their skills, fitness and commitment. Money wasted on Div 3. Why FAS?
