Euthanasia: Singaporeans ignore sanctity of life at their peril
December 17, 2008 Wednesday, 08:31 AM
I WRITE to share my personal reflections on the special report on euthanasia by Ms Sandra Davie last Saturday ('Right to die... or right to kill?').

Fortunately this 'in-your-face' logic is mulched over by the nanny state so we are home free in terms of making decisions. The electorate has spoken and it is with a cold clinical pragmatism that we approach politics as we approach life since the one dictates the other like never before in the age of pervasive government.

" Do no harm" - u do harm when the doc does something against the patients wish. Isnt the surgery they do hurt u in ways even though it is donewith the intention to help . Is that harm? If not then why does the ending the unbearable pain at the pleading of a patient and his/her loved ones seem like harm. Religions can still play their role in stressing the sanctity of life - but religion/spirituality must not force one to toe the line. Life is the most precious treasure I have, and if their ever comes a stage i want to give up, I would like to do so without worrying that my loved ones will be penalised for helping me. Religions still will play a major role in motivating me, in giving me the ability to look beyond my pain but ultimately it should be my choice.
Now why is the writer bringing in the abortion into this. The so-called slippery slope he proclaims that started in 1974- it is not as if they were no abortions b4 that or not as if they has been a steep rise in abortion since.
Religions guide us, motivate us, supports us - but it cannot rule us. If it does it is not a religion

There are no religions in the Spiritual realm.
Souls do not have earthly religions to separate them physically. .

sun_singapore: "you do harm when the doc does something against the patients wish."
Surely you can see how flawed your logic is? Why is patient or individual autonomy such a big issue? The bigger picture is whether or not individual autonomy sometimes has to be over-ridden. To claim individual autonomy as the supreme good is foolish.
"Religions guide us, motivate us, supports us - but it cannot rule us. If it does it is not a religion" - sun_sg
Religions, fyi, are supposed to rule us. Religions that hold to reincarnation believe that what you will be reborn as are ruled by immutable laws, such as dharma and karma. The 3 Monotheistic beliefs hold to a God, who rules the world and indeed the afterlife.
You may believe that your individual autonomy is what's most important to you. But try not to reshape the world in your own image while you're at it.

Reincarnation
If the human world is filled with only 1st time soul [no reincarnation of old souls], then progress on earth in the human physical world in science, research and development in all areas of modern tech, etc. will be slow.
Some are new souls. Some are old souls.
Old souls pick things up [the uptake] faster than the new souls.
The old souls are able to come up with new inventions and ideas faster than the new souls.
Some children in the same family [or family tree, DNA connections, some say] have different attributes and abilities in their uptake. Some are slower than others. Some have attributes that others do not have.
The advancement of the human race cannot rely on only first time souls, new souls. Progress will be very slow and new ideas will be hard to come by relying on the abilities of new souls.
Old souls contribute in the faster development of science and tech in this physical world for the advancement of all aspects of development in science [general, medical, communications] and technology, education, etc.

If someone is extremely ill, suffering, or paralysed, and wants to take his life, who are we to judge? It should be his choice, and his choice alone.

This topic is very difficult in Singapore due to our diverse values (religion & race) and perspective to the "new" world due to age groups and personal experiences.

Old and New souls and Reincaration.
Look at al the hanchos [ability to earn the top salaries] in all the various industries, in the private and public sectors, in finance, science, medical, education, law, govt, etc. etc.
All the hanchos are not new souls.
