THIRTY years after the Middle Kingdom threw open its gates and embarked on economic reforms, it will enter a tougher phase of progress, predicts Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew.

There are good reasons for Mr Lee or any intellectual to be optimistic about the prospect of China. The Chinese and the Japanese and the Koreans are roughly similar in the cultural and intellectual development. If there they can develop into what they are, why can't the Chinese with improved environment?

How long is 30 years, 50 years or 25 years?

Those earning $30,000 per month, do they know how long is 25 years?

25 years to save $30,000 at $100 saving per month. That is the kind of 25 years for the lowly paid.

30 years China. Safe bet. The earlier forecast on China will derail if this recession is prolonged.

What will be in 30 to 50 years? Only the Creator knows..

Question is, will Capitalism collapse into a Heap, if Yes, how, if No, why?

Who dare ask MM this question?

Who dare ask MM, aftrer Madoff, who will be next?

Actually, I think MM Lee is more optimistic about China than the Chinese themselves. The Chinese leaders have said that the current economic crisis is a challenge to China. Their scholar has warned that the current economic condition in China, if not dealt with appropriately, might ignite social instability.

But MM Lee has often been optimistic about many things. When the subprime crisis first started, MM Lee thought that this might be the first time when the US had a flu, Asia might not get an influenza. When the economic conditions seemed clearer, with more workers in Asia axed and a couple of economists believing that Singapore's economy might be the worst hit in Asia next year, that optimism waned.

Not easy to get it right all the time when forecasting the Unseen.

Not even a few weeks ahead now with things so fluid, with Madoff bombshell last week, who will be next in the weeks ahead.

A forecast of 30 to 50 years is a long period of time.

What will be will be.

ASEAN I think is Singapore no.1 interest. US is no.2 important. I think MM Lee is just trying to raise China importance from no.5 to no. 3(same as Japan and S Korea).

I'm not sure you could point to China's next phase of progress. There are still many peasants in the interior regions of China who have not been tapped and have not even entered the first phase, if you want to call it that.
So, there are going to be a whole lot of different phases going on all over the country at one time.

Looking forward, Mr Lee said: 'Whether it will be one man, one vote for the President of the Republic, I doubt because I think that won't work.'
