Smoking ban extended
December 12, 2008 Friday, 01:30 PM

FROM January 1, smokers will have to stub out in all hotel lobbies and 5 metres away from all entrances and exits of buildings.
The smoking ban will also cover almost all indoor places, with the inclusion of non air conditioned premises like lift lobbies, markets, multi-storey and basement carparks. Smoking will also be banned in outdoor areas like playgrounds and exercise areas.

This is wonderful news!

For too long, non-smokers have had endure walking in and out of buildings forced to hold their breaths.

Hopefully, the public will see less of smokers huddling outside entrances, standing, sitting, squatting and stooping.

It will be nice if it is banned along footpaths as well. Walking behind a smoker, especially with a baby is all bad.

This is long overdue. I hope the authorities will enforce the ban strictly.
Companies employing security guards should take note - not only are your guards smoking while on duty in public places but the guard house of many private condominiums are also often filled with plumes of smoke.

About time!! Get those lazy enforcement officers who catch 1 offender a month to wake up their damn ideas.

Ban here, ban there no use if nobody enforce the law.
You think smokers care about publicity activities?
That's what NEA does best: conduct meetings and dialogues.

Know of any auxiliary police outfit that employs non-smokers to catch those idiots. Willing to work on commission basis. Must provide stun-gun and handcuff just in case those idiots get violent.

Had tried calling the NEA a couple of times about smokers smoking in designated non-smoking seating areas in certain popular eating places. The NEA said they will send their people to look into it. But each time I went back, there are still non-smokers there puffing away like chimney stacks. No point passing those regulations when there is no or weak enforcement. It simply makes the Singapore Government no better than a paper tiger In the eyes of those recalcitrant smokers.

Actually, we should not just rely on authorities to enforce the law. We non-smokers should exercise our right to fresh air by politely pointing out to smokers who flout the rules. Otherwise, antisocial smokers would continue with their blatant flouting of rules.
