Baby strollers: Orchard Road an obstacle course
December 10, 2008 Wednesday, 06:05 AM

MANY months ago, I took my baby out shopping in a stroller in Orchard Road for the first time. I was naturally excited and thought it would be a cinch. However, that day made me think twice before I take my daughter in a stroller by myself again.

You want the Govt to change the whole Singapore because of your one baby?? Why can't you follow what other parents are doing when they shop in Orchard. They are not complaining much.

most buildings in orchard road were built under the old building code i.e. not handicap friendly.

under the new building code, either building modernisation, facelift, revamp or new developments, BCA requires all developers to factor in handicap facilities.

the writer will agree with me should she visit newer buildings/facilities.

Eh no complaints doesn't mean they are happy with the arrangement.. I think most of them have become resigned to the fact

Common sense would have told you not to bring a stroller to Orchard Road or even not go there at all! Should have gone to a more stroller friendly place like Raffles City or Marina Square.

What's wrong with having a more stroller-friendly place?

Common sense? When you're not disabled or have special needs, what common sense when you aren't inconvenienced? "Common sense" is highly contextualized.

Common sense is to know that you have the inconvenience of having a small child with you, and you avoid places that are stroller unfriendly.

Common sense is also making your life as simple and convenient as possible when you have 3 kids to look after. That means making sacrifices!

Why are today's generation of youngsters so spoilt? Eh, Mdm Wee, remember your mother's / grandmother's time when babies were carried? I recently saw one young ethnic Chinese mother who followed the Malay style of tying sarongs to the waist with her baby near to her chest.

It brought a smile to my face because that is one way of bonding with your child. She did her shopping with both hands free some more.

Maybe to you and your ilk, Mdm Wee, this method does not seem "sophisticated" as you have obviously followed the angmoh way of putting your baby on a *stroller*. Was not it used to be simply called *PRAM*?

By the way, I had come across so many angmoh forums whereby so many of them angmoh trailing spouses also complaining about Singapore being *stroller* and wheelchair unfriendly.

Some have the gall to take such minor inconveniences to call all of us BACKWARD. I don't see why the authorities SHOULD bend backwards to accommodate these whiny wastes of space with too much time on their paws.
