The survey was done using data collected from Q1 and Q2. If they dare to publish this during the horrendous performance of Q2 and Q4, i respect them for the bravery!

"The report, based on a survey done in the middle of this year, said that the employment rate for locals here has risen to 77 per cent - up from 76.5 per cent a year ago."

"The jobless rate also went up, after reaching a decade low in the second half of 2007, with the less skilled remaining more vulnerable to unemployment."

Sigh..this layperson is hopless with numbers. Can anyone help me to understand how can the employment rate up at the same time with jobless rate??

Dare they split up the "Resident population" employment numbers into PRs/FTs versus true Singaporeans? I guess not. State secret!!

layperson (#6)

Got me too! The only explanation I could find may be that taking the words from the article, the "employment rate" was about the "Locals", while the "jobless rate" was about the "Residents" - including "non-locals" perhaps? Otherwise it makes little sense to me too.

On another note, did anyone else notice how the article title is "Women, older workers up", but the link on the ST homepage says "Govt effort pays off"??

Does effort imply deliberate intent?

The intent to cause our elderly, who could have stayed home and enjoyed life after a hard life of backbreaking work, to have to return to work or risk not having enough to get by? The intent to cause the traditional model of a one-breadwinner family to be forced to go double-income in order to sustain the family, resulting in having to leave the child to the care of an external, unrelated caretaker, since even the grandparents now have to go back out to work?

If so, "great effort" indeed.

Hmmph.

the base of employment rate is population whereas the base of jobless rate (i.e. unemployment rate) is 'economically active' population.. hence, it's possible for both rates to be increasing.

another pt : locals = residents
