It's about who can afford better tutors
November 26, 2008 Wednesday, 02:46 AM

LAST Thursday, my daughter received her Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results. We were proud of her 252, not because it is high, but because she wanted no help and designed her own study schedule with no external or home tuition.

Welcome to the real world, Ms Liu. While we are are all born equal, some are more equal than others. I believe the system caters to the the majority. Those with the financial means does have an advantage. All I can say is that those who lack the financial resources need to make up with hard work. We have seen exceptions though they may be far and few between.

I believe many readers see your views and do agrees. What you have shared is the examination system which is one to one. There are other aspects in life that cannot be simply on examination system but take efforts to nurture like value system in life which cannot be just sub-contract to a 3rd party. So success is more than just examination alone.

The writer's view is possibly a gut feel and not supported by facts. In the previous year, the top PSLE was a malay girl from very humble family background. You need to check the official facts and analyse the students grade vis-a-vis their family background. You may find the assertion not fully supported.

What the writer of this forum letter said is very true.

There's like a lesser form of meritocracy in our society, where children from richer backgrounds get a headstart in life, and because of this headstart, might go on to get scholarships.

My heart goes out to children in the lower income families, whose parents are already struggling to make ends meet, and do not have the ability to pay for the "enrichment" classes.

Form the majority. Then form the government.

I think this observation is true not only of the PSLE but also of many other areas of life in Singapore...

Face it la. This is the real world.

Give you an example,

If our ministers or PM send their son to serve NS. Willing any officer dare to come out and say, "So and so your son is not cut for being a leader, he can only be a rifleman, I am not going to send him for officer course."

You get the point?

There will always be inequality in the world. But what gives hope to all of us is when the stronger is able to show compassion and love to the weaker among us.
