"Our current dominance is not a pre-ordained right. Every election we must earn anew, at the ballot box, the mandate of our fellow Singaporeans. It is a process which is honest and open to contest."
Thanks for saying that.....anyway, so what are the disadvantages, if any, of having a single party system (so that we are making an informed choice)...do one expect the party to err...articulate this? If not, the point speaks for itself...
what is really a mystery, is, despite a sizeable number of singaporeans voting for the opposition in each elections, only one or two opposition MPs make it to the parliament each time.
I dun agree 1 party system work.Long ago, when there was good balance of parties in paliarment, any issue can be debated before it is agree/not agreed. Some MP represent ppl view becos they have good reason to help ppl so that next GE they can once again sit it. These are mostly the democrats.
'1 party works', rather it 'works' this way :
When ppl forsaken the balance of power/alternate views for own their self-benefits. 1 party era comes, ERP is passed without argument. GST is argued but not enough power-it is with us today. CaSINo bill is bulldozed thru. HOTA, AMD, electricity, train/bus/taxi, telephone, petrol price all are 'blessing' to the ppl. Idea is 'to cast a social net to make money', yet the country has so much to spend and lost.
All these acts are passed becos 1 party got un-rival advantage. I know ppl will say some is not related to gov, I aggregate all due to INFLATION, who controls (or can controls) inflation ?
I am considering my own benefits now, I dun want price increase anymore after next GE.
The problem with one party system is not so much the lack of diversity. The problem with a one-party system is that it lacks check-n-balances. Such a system does not run into trouble if our leader is benevolent and not corrupt.
For example, given a one-party system, if we were to have someone like Chen Shui Bian as our PM, that PM could remain in power for more than 2 terms. After all, we don't vote for our PM. We simply vote for our MPs.
I am always suspicious when some touts their own virtues and successes..this is just another talking head giving the party line..they are so indoctinated that they think if they disagree on the color to paint a wall then that is some sort of earth shattering "open discussion" or "free thinking" The proff is..how many PAP memebrs or MP's have ever left the party??? thats an indicator of groupthink..and to try and feed the crap to the populace that the PAP has a stranglehold on the only "quality" talent is absurd and worse shows the hubris of the ruling party
