They already said: tranquilizer takes time to take effect. In the mean time if they kena hit by a needle, the tigers will turn even more nasty. Guns (the real thing) would be under lock and key some where and it will take a long time to get them.
The next time some one jump from a HDB, remember to blame HDB for not grilling up all their corridors or putting cameras to watch all the blocks.
The financial institutions have all sorts of sexy gadgets and software etc to do risk management and assessment................ we still have people jumping shooting themselves on exchange floor and jumping out of the windows.
Don't spend silly money on such stuff unnecessarily. It's really difficult to fall into the lion's den accidentally.
-Like seenitall has said, it takes time to effect. Secondly, I believe they did not use their rifles also because they might hit miss and hit Nordin.
-Do you seriously think sounds will scare the tigers? Everyone's better off clapping or yelling.
-It takes time for the shooters to reach. So what else to do in the meantime than to throw brooms and covers?
Oh, risk assessment and management huh. Yes, politically we need them. Perhaps it exists so that no one will be held accountable for things? Have you seen them work? No amount of paperwork can prepare you for an emergency.
Well, what would YOU have done? Even if you had more resources, you would have done pretty much the same.
What if someone dives under the tram as it is moving? Impale himself with the broom, ice cream cone? Bang his head against poles (lamps, directory, fences)? Throw himself over the barb wire? There are also knives in the kitchens (animal feed, restaurants) too.
Well thanks anyway. It's almost heroic that you pointed out all these.
Singapore Zoo take pride in its open concept zoo. Nothing should be changed to prevent a repeat incident. If a person wants to enter the den when barriers are in place, then be it and face the consequences. Barriers are there to prevent access but is never intended to stop anyone from scaling it and cross the line.
I think the last thing we want to see is the tigers in metal cages and we see them through grills. But then again, anyone can just stick their hands in to touch them.
Anyway, the tigers are captive animals and are more likely to play with you rather than to kill. But man and beast can never be playmates as we are doomed when swiped by their paws. Their touch can rip skin and flesh. God creates the tiger not for humans to keep as pet or playmate.
there is a chinese saying: shi hou gong ming i.e. one will say many things after an incident.
i think the writer is one. the zoo has already explained. if tranquilizer is used, it will agitated the tiger more; if gun fire is used, what if miss and hit someone (as well as if fired thru the air?) I think our police also shoots to kill rather fire a shot thru the air. anyway, as the zoo claimed, the tigers are back at their den when the guns arrived. what's there to shoot?
The safeguards in Singapore Zoo's open concept are excellent after having being to many other zoos in the world. However, if someone is bent on commiting suicide, there is really nothing one can do. Whinners should stop making a hoo-ha over it.
I think the writer wrote the letter for blame sake. She has not studied the lay out of the zoo. Half knowledge is dangerous. There is no question of visitor 'falling' into the tiger area. There is a moat where one can fall accidentaly. It is a trench. Tiger cannot jump there. Only a suicidal person will climb up the moat towards the tiger area.
