"It is believed he was not supposed to be in the Tiger enclosure and was assigned to clean the Chimpanzee section on Thursday.

He was seen behaving in an agitated manner before he fell into the moat. "

OMG!!! Are they trying to say he's committed suicide???

The jobs relating to maintaining a zoo has higher risks than the typical job. Unlike other jobs, the occupants for the zoo literally sometimes DO BITE BACK. This is another case of outsourcing (literally for the sake of cost savings) gone deadly wrong...

{The commotion attracted the attention of a keeper who was nearby. Other keepers sprang to Mr Nordin's rescue by distracting the tigers. The keepers managed to separate the Mr Nordin from the tiger}

How did the zoo keepers separate the tiger(s) from its/their prey? With their bare hands? ST should be more precise/concise in their reporting.

It is certainly regretful that Mr Nordin should fall victim to the cats in captivity. On reading the passage and the summary, there appears to be an overlap in factual reporting and personal judgement captured therein. This overlap is evident in the use of the word "fallen" in the summary and the word "jumped" in the passage. The author appears to insinuate that the victim Mr Nordin had the intention to cause bodily harm to himself. It would be appropriate if the author could put forth more evidence to support this suggestion.

A life has been lost and at this moment, nobody is to draw up a conclusion or speculate as to what happened. Leave it to the experts to investigate what actually happened and the laws to decide the final verdict.
Let's make Singapore Zoo a safe place to spent our leisure time, both for locals and tourists alike!

This article is so full of errors.

I agree with basement48 that we should not draw any conclusion as yet, nor shoudl we speculate.

"believed to have fallen" could be the closest that the reporter could pen (from the report, the Australian tourists "heard a splash"). No one saw, nor did the report categorically state, how the worker got into the moat. Nothing is mentioned of what happened before the splash. The investigation should be left to the relevant authorities.

Spare a thought also for the family of the unfortunate worker. Not really nice to see suggestions of suicide being circulated. It is already enough anguish for them to lose some one in the family.

Whether outsourcing was "appropriate" can be subjected to loads of comments and rhetoric, but that (in my opinion) may not have bearing on the incident. "How was it outsourced" may have some bearing, but again, may have no bearing if investigations do not pin the incident to outsourcing. Let it rest in the meantime.

chooks06 (#11) - "Not really nice to see suggestions of suicide being circulated."

True but it's the contents of the article which are definitely very misleading and unfair to the victim.
