BEIJING - CHINESE actress Gong Li's decision to become a Singapore citizen sparked an online debate in China on Tuesday, with many branding her a traitor but others defending the star.
Gong, who served recently as a Chinese parliament delegate, collected her Singaporean citizenship over the weekend, a lawmaker in the city-state said on Monda

Those who are seemingly outrage and debate about Gong Li taking up Singaporean citizenship have nothing better to do? She's married to a Singaporean, right? Are they expecting her husband to take up Chinese citiizenship?

She obviously has strong reasons to give up her chinese citizenship and also receive the hatred of the masses.

Maybe she is fed up with the chinese officials and chinese system??? Maybe she is pressured into doing stupid things by her socialist system and its officials back home and wants some freedom??? Maybe the party officials keep on asking her for bribes or favors and want her to sleep with them???

We've seen how chinese officials can behave.....super corrupt and super abusive, altho it is so much better nowadays.

Doesn't she have a singaporean husband??? Who got into some argument with the chinese authorities over business??? Maybe they pressured her for favors in order to go easy on her husband??? Who knows???

Whatever, she is willing to face the anger of her ex-citizens to take up singapore citizenship.

I welcome Ms. Gong Li to Singapore. I support her also(altho I don't watch her films--too depressing, everytime everybody die, got sad ending)

Stay Safe, Gong Li, my fellow singaporean sister.

Gong Li plans to use her Sg passport to go visiting her American male friend. Sometime later she may divorce but still retains the passport for travel.

I dont know the reason why Gong Li take up Singapore citizenship now and not immediately after she married her a Singaporean in the mid 90s. However, she left a vivid impression on me way back in 2002 when her reply was "it's a matter of survival" when she was asked by a ST journalist whether she would shell prawns for her Singaporean husband like her China counterparts who married Singapore men. At that point, it made me realise that Singaporeans are a lucky lot as we do not worry about our livelihood as much as others from developing countries. So although Gong Li is a big movie star today, she probably has gone through or witnessed hardships in her birth country and therefore understands the means for surivival. So her decision in taking up Singapore citizenship today is probably a conscientious effort on her part.
