Yoga: Keep it free of religious bias
November 11, 2008 Tuesday, 07:24 AM

MY FIRST yoga teacher is a Christian. In my class, there was a Christian student who was in a dilemma about disobeyng her pastor who forbade participation in yoga and her own search that suggested yoga as a means to relieve her chronic backache.

More importantly: hospitals, nursing homes, day care centers etc. should be kept free of religious bias. Stop death bed conversion happening even in public hospitals.

Why should the christian student be in a dilemma in the first place? She's a victim of her own device. She knew yoga has helped her yet she chose to be led by the nose by dogmas as decreed by some pastor. Think on your own. Let good sense prevail and it'll be a better world. The sad truth is that many religious people fail to do so.

Being in a delimna is not always a bad thing - it shows the mind is thinking, just have not worked it out. Following gut feel is not necessarily the right thing to do all the time.

If the student is not even in a delimma but accepted the words from any party, be it a pastor or a friend, then there is a real problem.

People get in a delimma because they can see more than 1 side to an issue.

It is worse when someone dismisses any alternative POV simply because he cannot perceive more than his side of the story.

Listening to alternative POV and different parties is alright. At the end of the day, a decision must be made.

That must be brought about by logic and good sense guided towards betterment of oneself.

Wallowing in perenial dilemmas is tantamount to indecision

More could be lost by indecision than wrong decision.

Yoga is a Hindu system of philosophy aiming at the mystical union of the self with the Supreme Being in a state of complete awareness and tranquillity through certain physical and mental exercises.

Christians should be aware of the fact that Hindu's Supreme Being is not the same as the God of Christianity. It is not a question of whether to obey their pastors or not. If have a chronic backache, can always seek treatment from a chiropractor.

In such circumstances ,let common sense be your teacher and not religion.

define "holy".

God's holiness doesn't contain itself in the logic of man.

The pastor is not God. Why must he feel guilt when facing him. The pastor cannot wash away your sins. tell your problem to Jesus and be led by him whether Yoga should be continue for good.

Sometimes the stiff and almost senseless codes existing in religions are causing unnecessary frictions , that can make people fanantical about one's belief . The basic teachings in all religions have been twisted to suit men's own crusade.
How can a simple excercise like yoga be so wrongly interpreted ?
I visit old temples , it does not mean that I am a believer but it just says that I appreciate their works and
I am awed by its historical past.
