Sentosa hotel: Draconian rules
November 10, 2008 Monday, 06:02 AM

I WANTED to book the suite for my mother's birthday at Amara Sanctuary, Sentosa and invite my family. However, I had a rude shock when the hotel staff conveyed its rules, which are stringent and unreasonable. No parties are allowed, the number of guests is controlled and all guests must leave by 10.30pm or they will be told to leave.

You understand what is 'sanctuary' or not? Do you make noise at such place?

Before you go around accusing hotels with a hotel just because it did not allow you to have things the way you wanted it, I suggest you get a copy of the rules in all the hotels you have stay and see if they have the same restrictions. From my experience, they are generally the same. When they allow you to do things outside those rules, it is a privilege, not an entitlement.

I have been to Amara once and have been very satisfied with their services.

One question. Was the party rowdy and thus the hotel received complaints? If yes, I am sure the hotel is justified to have asked your guests to leave. If not, I would be disappointed by their lack of flexibility or perhaps their service standard had dropped after only 3 months...

I congratulate the Amara hotel on understanding the real meaning of service. It will be high on my list next time I need a holiday.

There is this popular misconception that the customer must always be king, but not every customer is a blessing. The hotel must take the interests of all of its customers at heart. Imagine taking a holiday, only to have a loud party crowd nextdoor!

Something like this happened on my last stay in Bangkok. So here you have this family putting down 200 dollars for a hotel room, then they invite 20 guests, bring their own drinks and food, children running and screaming down the corridor...

It's only too right if a hotel is "inflexible" with such "customers".

Does Ms Doshi know the different between a hotel room and a function room? Hotel room are meant for 2 person to stay and have a quiet time. You do not book a hotel room and invite 50 people and have a big party till whatever time you like.

What you need is a function room for your party celebration. Don't blame the hotel! I reckon they are doing the right thing here to protect the comfort and privacy for the rest of their guests from one unreasonable guest like you.

birthday party in a hotel room ?

well i think ms doshi is very honest to tell the hotel that she wanted to hold a party there - in the room, which is of course not right; but then the hotel should have offered alternative venue like the restaurant or function room....and provide the necessary quotation and pricing, F&B provided...I fault the hotel here for half-past six service......hahaha .... like that the hotel could have made more money and ms doshi must have been very happy lah

Ms. Doshi is merely wanting to save costs by not hiring the function room and wanting to enjoy the facilities by going for the cheaper option, but forgetting that having a big family gathering will be inappropriate for having it at a guest room. Having been a hotelier myself (but have left the trade) I confirm that all respectable 5 star hotels do abide by these rules.
