Some Malay grassroots leaders worry that the large pool of foreign workers in Singapore will compete with lowly skilled Malays for scarce jobs as economic growth slows.
In times of affluence, there may be certain jobs shunned by Singaporeans and these jobs are occupied by foreigners.
In such times of crisis with looming retrenchments, I hope such jobs will become more acceptable by Singaporeans and should be occupied by Singaporeans.
Singaporeans should come first; provided Singaporeans ourselves wants to be considered first...
I had been having this stubborn view since when I was in secondary 4.
How many children I want to have in S'pore depend on my financial ability.
the prime minister had said those who are better off please have more kids;
those who are poor concentrate having less but give them the best.
Household income less than $2000 per month - 1 kid
Household income more than $5000 per month - 2 kids and above
1. Nuture: richer parents can afford to give their kids advantages in several areas. For example, tuition in all subjects, which less well off parents cannot afford.
Those jobs which they have created a really low value, low paying jobs which Singaporeans cannot live on. In a deep recession, those jobs might just disappear. What should be left for Singaporeans are those middle level jobs which pay a minimum of $1.8k. A lot of these are now taken by FWs who directly compete with locals.
"They help keep jobs here because their lower wages mean lower costs for companies."
FWs depress wages. I heard him on TV, that if a company has 50% locals, and 50% FWs, that company can keep his cost down. If all FWs are sent home, then that 50% of employed locals will lose their jobs, because cost will be too high.
