How should teachers today behave on their own time?
November 08, 2008 Saturday, 02:03 AM

IT IS not surprising that teachers get adverse publicity if they behave in a manner that is improper, immoral or downright criminal.

I am a former sec sch teacher who resigned years ago. To me, the at least perceived increase in bad behaviour of teachers has to do with not only the recruitment strategy, but also with the EPMS( ie. the teachers' appraisal system).

With the EPMS, teachers who can wayang(ie. pretend) better tend to get better grades for their work performance. But is pretence the kind of behaviour we wish our students to emulate from their teachers? I don't think so. Yet, unintentionally or not, the EPMS has been structured so that teachers who are able to wayang better thrive better in an school environment meant for nurturing innocent children.

A teacher can have the best moral behaviour but she will still get a D grade for work performance, if she cannot wayang well. At the same time, a teacher who wayangs well in school can still get an 'A' or 'B' grade for work performance, even if she poses for the Playboy magazine (of course, provided that she doesn't get discovered). Something is seriously wrong with both MOE's recruitment strategy and appraisal system.

Me too. I used to be a pri sch teacher but now no more because I was promoted to teach in sec sch but now no more because I run my own private school now. Teaching people lesson is in my blood.

Isn't it true that regardless if a teacher teaches in pri or sec sch, the salary is the same?

Aren't teachers remunerated according to their qualifications rather than the level they teach?

Whats wrong with a lady in a bikini. Whats so immoral about it. If thats immoral dont go swimming ; you may end up seeing your female teacher in a bikini.

You are right. Teachers are paid according to the qualifications and not the levels they teach on entry to the profession. Hence, a graduate after NIE training will start off with the same pay at the lowest grade whether he teaches in a primary or a secondary school.

However, once in the job, he can be promoted to a higher grade if only he scores a B or better grade. I think there are 4 grades for general officers and 3 grades for senior officers who must be holding some posts like Senior Teachers or Heads of Depts or Vice Principals before they go onto super-scale grades.

Teachers are often graded unfrairly by the schools as it is difficult to measure the amount of work put in by teachers. Normally, those who are seen to work hard, though they may not be so, are graded well and get promoted easily.

Publishing personal photos in revealing swimwear is perfectly alright. Young people should not "be strait-jacketed by what they deem conservative, old-fashioned and unacceptable norms of social behaviour." They must challenge old rules. Otherwise, ours will be a dull society.
