Ill-conceived: MDIS dress code crackdown
November 07, 2008 Friday, 02:22 AM

I REFER to yesterday's article about the Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS) enforcing dress codes in school ('Dress code crackdown at MDIS'), which is the most upsetting news in weeks.

Got an idea, Mr. Teng. Since you say in Singapore's climate singlets or shorts are very comfortable for you, why don't you also push for such dressing in work places? After all, we should be more concerned with substance and quality of work, as you said.

#2 - I support the writer. When I was temping at MTV, it had a very relaxed dress code too, bermudas were ok even on working weekdays. So it depends on the context. At the end of the day, it really depends on one's frame of mind. What's wrong with wearing singlets and shorts, seriously? Paradigm shift needed?

Mr. Teng. It's actually quite simple. Every vocation has its own dress code.If you want to wear singlet to work, be a lifeguard. If you work in a bank in a customer-facing post, you wear formal pants, shirt and tie. Can you imagine what would happen if the reverse happens? I wouldn't want to deal with a banker wearing singlet.
MDIS has a dress code when you join the school. Instead of complaining, just follow the dress code and get on with the "substance" of why you join the school in the first place...that is to study. If you to change the rules, then I suggest you study hard and one day come back as the CEO and make singlets the new school uniform. You can even change the name of the school to Management Development In Singlets. In the meanwhile, grow up, stop whining and study hard.

Teng Kie Zin impresses `at tertiary level, superficiality would not be the focus of education, but rather, we would look at substance and quality of work. I cannot see how hair colour or shorts and slippers indicate a student's ability to do well in school. As a tertiary student myself, and in the Singapore climate, I find wearing singlets or shorts very comfortable'.
Annabel Chong is a good example Teng forgot to mention in his/her letter. She had a good academic brain despite the superficiality of her notoriety.
Yes I agree bosomy young girls wearing singlets and very short shorts displaying gluteal folds are extremely comfortable in our hot climate. Eating the apple from the Tree of knowledge in Eden...

MDIS management be realistic, many students can't afford to dress like your staff, also they dont come to campus in aircond cars like most of your managers, cut the sudents some slack if they dont have the aircon cars.
Look at Microsoft policy about dressing - allow them dress to suit the climate or risk losing your students to Institutions that care more about substance rather than form.

With such hot weather in Sg, those going to go non-uniform institutions should go topless.

I think people like the letter writer are not coming to school to study. they come here to wear revealing dress, low cut blouses, sexy dresses as well as casual latrine attire. If you are not interested in studies why do you spoil those serious students? Please go back to your native place and smoke marijuana.
