Bicycle kiosks at MRT stations
November 04, 2008 Tuesday, 04:18 PM

THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) is considering building bicycle kiosks at MRT stations to encourage more people to cycle before making the rest of the journey by public transport.
LTA chief executive Yam Ah Mee on Tuesday said the LTA is studying the idea, and hopes to partner private vendors to provide the kiosks.

In holland, in the city and suburds, we have bicycle kiosks at MRT stations. Some people that does'nt want to take feeder bus, they cycle. And here, we are safe to cycle cos we have bicycle lanes for cyclists. But in S'pore with heavy traffic everywhere, do you think it's safe for cyclists??? Maybe the govt. also consider building bicycle lanes as well.

No problem if these bicycles do not block the way to entrances and exits.

People tend to put bicycles everywhere and then no way to the trains.

"THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) is considering building bicycle kiosks at MRT stations to encourage more people to cycle before making the rest of the journey by public transport".
Is this some earth-shattering announcement by LTA? Or as usual we are followers when other countries have had them for eons - like user-friendly signal directional lights, bus stops LCD displays in the buses, or MRT protective doors to prevent falls into tracks.
Still considering only? I wonder why we pay them so much for.
Or why older MTR HK can schedule trains less than 2 minutes apart when the SMRT woman boss blames our outdated not overhauled signalling system for not being able to do so despite our newer trains.
Will the next earth-shattering announcement be the abolishment of $1 coin deposit and refund when elsewhere they care about commuter-friendliness more and do away with this time-wasting inconvenient nonsense?

Bicycles parked at MRT stations are at the mercy of vandals and thieves. The China Chinese treats bicycles as gold back home.

In Germany (Munich), you can borrow bicycle from any major subway station. Just call in a number, dial the bicycle number to get the bicycle unlocked. Then after used, just leave at any road junction and lock by any fixed object like road signs and etc.

But we need clear rules for bicycles, just like in other countries....like even if they cycle on footpath, they should follow direction of the road.

I wonder if the minister who proposed this has even tried riding on our Singapore roads? Our roads are so cyclist-unfriendly. The main roads are so narrow that I feel like cars and buses are going to knock me over any time. When I tried to ride on the pavement, it's bumpy and more often than not, the pavement will suddenly end and break off for no reason, which leaves the cyclist having to halt to a sudden stop or risks the possibility of falling off a 3 inch high curb. Well, if LTA does draw out a small section on the road for cyclist, then yeah, this idea may work.

be careful. if bicycle speed on pavement drops below 45km/h, ERP might be on the cards for bicycles :-)

The one in Bkt Batok looks run down and hardly any bicycles parked there. Not sure how they decide that it'll be successful on a big scale?
