Need legroom? Pay US$100
November 03, 2008 Monday, 12:50 PM

EXTRA legroom on Singapore Airlines now comes at a price - US$100 (S$147) for a return flight.
In a move that has upset some frequent fliers. the airline is charging a fee for a guaranteed 'preferred seat'.
These are essentially exit row seats that passengers can purchase before check-in, SIA said.

Ask ourselves why do we really need to airtravel? The risk involved during the flight? And the aftermath of frequent airtravel? The real SGD$$ aside, many citizens really do not or care less of their own health deterioration after the airtravel. If you really need to airtravel, keep it to the minimum, for your own health and wealth sake.

At the end of the day(or night), the challenge for each citizen of ROS(Republic Of Singapore) is to live out the Singaporean Moral principles.

It is living out these moral principles of self-education that matters. Carrot or stick cannot build a sustainable community with the free spirit.
The challenge though uphill is to live out this profession consistently, especially in the face of complex challeges and to bring more citizens on board, train of Healthy Wealth for ROS.

Under mandatory safety requirements set by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, passengers who ask for exit row seats must meet the following requirements:

- Be at least 21 years

- Be fully able-bodied, and capable of opening the exit doors and moving quickly, or reaching and passing through the adjacent emergency exit.

- Be able to understand and follow the safety instructions in English.

- Be in good health at the time of check-in, boarding, and during the flight.

I will ask SIA to pay me for me to seat there. Providing such services to them is not "free."

But not too surprise for them to come out with such policy, it is typical mind set of 3rd generations civil servant, i.e. the mind set of that "group" of people.

Any opportunity to milk that extra $1, they will do it.

Extra legroom? Maybe can let consumers know how much more space is "extra" and how much space is the default seat? Prices differ for all classes of flight and/or airlines? Blankets come with a price? Isn't it a default service?

Hey, it's a great policy established for safety reasons, but most people would avoid unnecessary troubles to service people, people are lazy in nature ya, only if they want to exit first in case of emergency or those are the last seats available! Probably a service payment for these "servicing people" on lives saved and services provided! Or cheaper seats at emergency exits?

I had written, and the article was printed, a couple months back highlighting Jetstar's practice of charging, what was supposed to be a safety necessity, exit rows in the name of comfort. I really think CASE should do something about this. While I understand the need to maximize profit, charging for exit rows is unethical and clearly exhibiting profiteering.

There is a mandatory SAFETY REQUIREMENT set by CAAS, and yet these seats are considered a luxury now?

what are to expect next? Pay to sit next to exits on MRT? Aiyo....of all people...SIA...well done. Just as well I'm not a customer.

Why SIA charge extra for that kind of extra responsibility. Sitting near the exit door is stress because in times of emergency, you have to act. Might as well they charge extra for seats near toilet, window seat, seat near the tail of the plane since in case of air crash, survival rate there is the highest?

The people getting such seats cannot drink drink wine or other alcoholic drinks?

Then "bo hua," SIA must pay them instead.

Can I pay extra to be served by the most pretty air crew on board?

I think it is a fair policy. These exit row seats are much sought after as they offer greater comfort. I certainly would not mind paying an extra US$100/- for them especially on long haul flights.

To #8, if you think it is a fair policy, then every seat will have to be price discriminated. Like the post i mentioned earlier, seats near the toilet etc should have different pricing also. In that case, what kind of world are we going into?

To #8: yes, it is with extra leg room but it's not like it's a privilege. The extra leg room is meant for passengers to get off the plane in emergency, not for the creature comfort of passengers. I would rather that no one needs to work those doors for any reasons. Please, let's see things in perspective. Very simply, this is just one mindless way to take advantage of the situation, first started by short-sighted CFO of budget airlines, and now the disease has spread to our "It's a Great WAY TO FLY" national carrier, SIA.

Also, it is downright discriminatory for bigger and taller folks.
