Dual citizenship will only encourage more fake talents to take advantage of S'pore. Is S'pore short of talented people or so hardup for FTs? Why resort to toying with such a stupid idea? Ain't all our MIWs are 'A' Team calibre? If this idea is adopted, I am afraid we will have these FTs becoming MIWs with 'B' Team calibre. The end result is AB calibre govt is equal to 'Ali Baba' governance.
obviously, there has to be strict regulations governing the handing out of dual citizenships. The govt is not that stupid as to not foresee the 'obstacle' that u have stated. It is not a stupid idea. It promotes mobility of talent and human resources( which is singapore's most impt resource, fyi). It encourages overseas singaporeans to sustain links with Singapore (and even return to S'pore) even after working overseas for so many years, at the same time, not depriving them of the opportunities they are unable to have for not being a UK/EU citizen (for example). Some singaporeans choose to remain overseas because of job opportunities there etc so please do not be immature and start dissing them for being ungrateful to the nation and saying that they are quitters blahblahblah.
Also, the govt is elected (if u have so forgotten this fact), hence the govt is once again NOT STUPID to risk losing the support of the electorate with haphazard handling of dual citizenships.
i would gladly give up my aussie citizenship to become a singaporean. i consider singapore to be the best country that i have had the oportunity to live & work in.
Dual citizenship - fence sitting, the best of both worlds, or pure convenience of the individuals? No to dual citizenship. If Singapore and Japan goes to war (which is far fetched), which way will that young son point his gun at?
I may be outdated but the Japanese society does not accept dual citizenship either. Even Koreans, Chinese and Brazilians born, living, working and dying in Japan would be be given Japanese citizenship. Even if your son receive Japanese citizenship, single or dual, don't think his peers would accept that. Unless things have changed it is still a 'pure group' society.
Further being Japanese or 'dual' Japanese in Singapore does not carry much prestige either. So not sure if Singapore/Japan combination is worth pursuing, better off sticking to one.
nasron69: well it is very easy to give up your aussie citizenship and regain it again. it is as simple as ABC (just filling in a piece of paperwork).
You have that option, but no every Singaporean is as fortunate like you.
you don't have to decide until the boy turns a certain age, is it 11 or 16.5 years old, or something like that?
not allowing (for) dual citizenship points to a traditional/out-of-date dichotomous view that if you're not with us, then you must be against us. it speaks of an old-world view of the nation-state, which is necessarily linked to a certain ethnicity (or ethnicities if lucky), a common language or monolithic culture. there's no room for the actual continuum which exists. it's like saying if you speak english well, you can't speak mandarin or some other language well; oh well, you can, but not "equally" well, and if you do, you're abnormal.
