Don't stereotype foreigners like Dr Love
October 20, 2008 Monday, 01:23 AM

I WAS shocked to read last Thursday's statements by Mr Anthony Yeo, president of the Association of Marital and Family Therapy ('Poor choice of speaker'). This represents one of two extremes of stereotyping: the first that being a foreigner implies he is more experienced, the second, the opposite.

If you liston to Anthony too much, you will go bonkers. He is too commercial already.

i think Anthony is merely commenting on the tendency of MCYS or SDU to prefer foreigners just like we are always paying a lot of $$ to foreign consultants to advise us on everything.
There are good local experts who seem to have been overlooked.

"We learn from mistakes and sometimes from others' past experiences. To label someone with failed marriages as not qualified on love and marriage reflects shallow thinking."

Hmmm...what then qualifies someone as an expert on love,
if not a successful marriage? Is there any guarantee that someone with a failed relationship will learn something from it? Or perhaps they have got their fundamentals wrong and will keep repeating the same mistakes.

Marriage is a lifetime commitment. Someone who gets this wrong once might still get it right and be qualified to speak. To get it wrong repeatedly shows that they should put their own house in order before telling others about what they don't know.

Was there no stereotyping by the SDU too that foreign speakers are better?

Were there no qualified local speakers to talk and share on this topic?

Perhaps, my negative attitude towards such foreign speakers is that I had seen to many of such foreign speakers who are always good at talking, but they never walk the talk.

Foreigner or not, I suppose the participants would know better if he or she is good. It's good to have a choice, local or foreigner.

Dr Pat Love had three failed marriages, indicating the he didn't do well in his love life. Therefore, he now teaches how to be successful in love.

Well, you know what they say: 'Those who can do, do; those can't do, teach.'

(No offence to all teachers.)

"To label someone with failed marriages as not qualified on love and marriage reflects shallow thinking."

Just a question, If a person had failed in his math, will you ask that person to tutor you in math?
