If one can afford to raise a baby, why work? This is because most of the working population cannot afford to raise a family unless both parents are employed.
it's only because Singaporean have got no choice but have to work. The Poll conducted by me was almost 90% of people I know would rather retire if they can. They would want to take time off to tour round the world, to have more leisure times with families, to be able to drink coffees with friends without facing the pressure of constantly having to work to survive. Life is short and it's not all about working.
The sad truth is that most S'poreans (including the elderly workers at McDonald's) would not want to continue working, if they had the choice. How to not work or retire early when the cost of living here is astronomical? The poll actually reveals that more than half of baby boomers would rather retire - it's just that they have no choice.
I know that all my former trainees in the army were either coerced or threatened into switching from a pension scheme into a CPF one.
And now most of them are either driving taxis, flipping burgers or clearing tables, regretted not having the guts to stand up to the army when they should have.
It is absolutely not true that the elderly prefers to continue working because they are afraid to die of boredom or in-activity but from starvation and being thrown out of them homes by the HDB for arrears.
Do most retirees really have a choice? Please...Life is not as rosy as what the gahmen or press painted it to be to show that everything is fine and they are doing a good job. Most retirees now are the hardest hit. Employers are shunning them for younger FWs although there are a few `wayangs' staged by some agencies and the press. Even the Civil Services are retiring them early to make way for `new blood' while telling the private sectors to extend the retirement age.
Whether the poll was conducted correctly or not, is an encouragement for the baby boomers to come out of their comfort zone and contribute to society. Companies should consider employing them. So, some of the FT or FW who criticized Singaporean can go back to their home country. Secondly, baby boomers realized that if they stay at home doing nothing, may suffer from dementia. Thirdly, yes. cost of living is high and they want to be seen as able and be in touch. The problem for the companies to consider the baby boomers is perhaps the insurance premium they have to pay and the cost of medical fees for older workers.
