October 16, 2008 Thursday, 02:59 AM

I REFER to last Thursday's letter by Mr Zhong Zewei, 'It should've been the students' call'.

Ok, understand. "our right & responsibility as a publisher" ... who is this "our" community? Does that include the students?

Prof says "Nanyang Technological University will not allow our media platforms to be exploited". But his charges in NTU do not think so and are protesting the University's censorship.
NTU students are 3-year old kindergarten kids who cannot think independently and critically? They have to be mollycoddled and tied to NTU's apron strings and continue to suckle milk - so fearful they will be exploited by the bad guys. I noted its ranking dropped. Why is there such an abnormal fear of letting go or getting retribution?

Quote:
Nanyang Technological University will not allow our media platforms to be exploited to provide publicity for uninvited people who enter our campus to draw attention to themselves.
Was CSJ uninvited? Probably.
Did he enter NTU to draw attention to himself? Probably.

Did the NTU students' newsletter provide him with it? We could say so.

Should the NTU students, who are adults, be capable of judging for themselves how to report the event in their newsletter? YES!!!

Even if the administration believes the students' judgment was in error, this is not the way to help the students learn!

What lessons do the administration believe the student body would learn from this ban?

Let the students make their own decisions, and live by them. That's the only way for students in university to learn.

I am ashamed to be associated with NTU after this comment. All opposition parties are made up of Singaporeans serving Singaporeans. Each parties have a part to play in Singapore. Just because the PAP is dominant does not mean that they rule everything in Singapore, including papers and schools. These belong to the people. They can set guidelines, but please use your brain - dont follow them blindly. PAP is not Singapore. The people is. And they are entitled to their opinion. With no opposition, what will happen to Singapore ? Pay rise after pay rise. Look - they are building another ERP gantry outside my place ! Who is stopping these price increases right after election has taken place ? The opposition is not strong enough bec of lack of support from these so called learning institutions who are biased. Look at America - the 2 opposition parties are well accepted in any schools and represented everywhere. They offer the people diversity to choose from and act as check and balance. Wake up, Singapore !

The NTU professor is, ironically, doing a darn good job of promoting CSJ's agenda by refusing to publish the story.

Despite my disagreement with how NTU admin is handling this, I can guess some deeper concerns - they might not really be bothered by writing about the uninvited presence of a political activist this time round, but they probably want to ensure it would not happen if it is a homosexual rights activist the next time round.

Even so, NTU should be more worried if a university student cannot be expected of maturity to discuss and think for himself issues about homosexual rights.

We appeal to the Powers in NTU--let the youths think and decide!

Censorship, repression or strong arm tactics to get what the powers in ivory towers want are not the way to go!

Is NTU for the students to grow or for the Powers to control?

Sigh... NTU should perhaps keep quiet. The more they respond, the more obvious it becomes that the adminstration is simply towing the government's/PAP's line.... so silly. Even the NTU chiefs are censorious and un-media savvy. What do you expect from the students???
