Why electricity price hike was needed
October 16, 2008 Thursday, 02:54 AM

IN HIS letter last Friday, 'Billing consumers isn't the only way', Mr Bruno Serrien noted that the electricity tariff has increased by 48 per cent in the past 12 months. But this must be seen in the context of the rising fuel oil price, which has more than doubled during this period.

Director, Corporate Communications
Energy Market Authority

Ms Teo

Now that oil price has dropped to below US$80.....nearly half of the $155 used to justify the 21% hike, can we see a price reduction in the same ratio, please ?? i.e. reduc price by 75/155, can ?

Please reduce it, so that we will not complain when it goes up in sync with oil price increase in the future

I need some education here.

Ms Teo mentioned "liberalising the electricity market". Does it mean, as a consumer, I have a choice whether I want to buy my electricity from Power Plant A, B or C?

Ms Teo mentioned France and Japan. Can Ms Teo also explain Hong Kong?

Sure, Ms Teo from Energy Market Authority. Liberalizing will be good to the consumer. Just like how "liberalizing" the train and bus companies have benefited Singaporeans immensely; just like how liberalizing the waste collection sector have decreased our waste disposal costs. Just like how liberalizing the taxi companies have seen fares gone down. Just like privatizing Singtel have seen our phone bills gone down. Just like how liberalizing the HDB shophouse market have seen rents falling for everyone. Just like how opening up the housing market have seen a normal and sustainable appreciation in housing values.

Wow, Ms Teo, your religious belief to liberalization is indeed praiseworthy. You are like the new messiah selling us the concept.

Applause.

Jenny Teo (Ms) said EMA `will continue to do our part to help households conserve energy and save on their electricity bills'.
NO thank you - we can do that on our own with such punitive exorbitant electricity charges. Your primary role as EMA in your own words is `to protect consumers instead of simply 'passing the bill' to them'.
This is what the hoo ha is all about.
Also please answer about Hong Kong like Spore - no nuclear energy yet able to lower their electricity charges - such selective arguments only reinforces that perception that we consumers are being taken for a ride.

By next quarter (in January?), which is when we should expect the 'drop' in price, we would probably have clean forgotten about it. They will just use the prevailing price (if it is higher) to justify maintain the high price of electricity.

I blame gov for the price hike, dotted line trace back to them. Strange no MP wants to talk about this ? ppl LL. Alas, no point ppl keeps writing and 'discuss' on major publications. Ms Jenny Teo is now famous, poor her now also lost dun know what is right or wrong - black or white. Even black she can say until white !

OK lets turn bo-bian, kanna bully situation into ah-Q perspective :

Jenny/EMA, pls share PLEASE SHARE base on what model/statistic and which consulting company the forward fuel prices are forecasted ??

Current market situation is totally opposition with crude oil going down! If EMA forecast really materialise within the forecasted time.

Then, this model can be used by WHOLE SINGAPORE TO FORECAST TOTO AND 4D results. Rmb, we corporate sin always use statistic/model and forecast. This is what goodness that can come out of model/statistic !!
