The only way to handle this aspect of an ugly Singaporean is to make it a policy that such priority seats are reserved at all times for the elderly, pregnant or the young. In other words, these seats must not be taken at all, even if they are not occupied at that moment in time.
"...allocate a whole cabin to those in need" - A WHOLE cabin??? Dream on. It'll never ever happen in S'pore. To these operators, maximising resources is all they care.
Agree with #1. Allocated seats should only be used by those needy passengers just like those designated parking lots for the handicapped in carparks.
I doubt making the sign bigger will make any change at all !! As if ppl cant see those signs now.... they will choose to ignore no matter what size, designs or colour the signs are ! Pregnant women standing are simply ignored by this 'pretentious' sleeping passengers... no matter if they are chinese, malay, indian or etc... !! How shameful :(

Oh c'mon, okeep the seat empty for the hypothetical pregnant/ elderly person?
Just inculcate the value of giving up the seat (not just priority seats) Shame those who don't, loudly. "I'M PREGNANT /OLD ENOUGH TO BE YOUR GRANDFATHER / GRANDMOTHER / ON CRUTCHES / MISSING A LEG / FOOT YOU KNOW???"
Even the idiot still refuses to budge after that some kind-hearted soul will move to give you a seat.
The deeper issue is that ALL SEATS, priority or otherwise, should be given up to those in need. Priority seats first - but what if there are more people who need a seat that there are priority seats?
When will SMRT use the PA system to constantly blast the eardrums of those fast asleep to give up the seats to those who need it more than them? Is it that difficult to announce?
The beep sound on the PA system to inform the closing of the doors could be rather loud at times. It should be used to blast the eardrums of those fast leeping to wake up, to give up their seat to those who need it.
Also, when will SMRT issue the red badges with the words?
"Please, I need a seed".
Please issue the badges to the senior staff of SMRT and ask them to test it out.
Agree with you. they choose to ignore it, not a matter of the size of the signs...try to put $50 notes on the floor..I bet everybody will notice that...LOL
The only way to tackle this issue is to designated area (3 or 4 carriages, NOT SEAT)specially for those in needs...should name and shame those who enter the SPECIAL carriage. :)
OR
Come out with a special access card to access a certain seat who is reserve for those in needs. The seat will be up like the one in the cinema and if you got the card, you are able to bring the seat down...I doubt SMRT will do this cos it involves $. ;)
it is part of US federal law to yield priority seats (esp) to the disabled (this is indicated on their bus passes) and elderly. when the bus pulls in to take in boarding passengers who are disabled, elderly or otherwise in (greater) need of a seat, nearly everyone will give up theirs. it's part of the culture now, and it's a nice one to have.
