Personal consultant says: 'Consumers should understand the immense pressure we are facing.'
October 01, 2008 Wednesday, 05:45 AM

I REFER to the current market situation of Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy which led to the DBS High Notes burst recently. I am a personal financial consultant in a local bank. There are some factors I feel must be revealed to protect consumers' rights.

Ms Teng, I understand your predicament. Banks are like Ah Longs. Glad to know that you are conscientious enough. All investment related products are merely gambling. These so called'consultant' are out to make their commission and milked the customers dry. What has these 'consultants' done to help their customers during this hard time? I hope you will make enough money to pay off the "Ah Long" and do something meaningful. My best wishes to you.

Everyone has their "performance indicators" at work. You're not the only one stressed out. Welcome to the real world.

Rubbish. Ms Teng has forgotten to mention why she chose this profession.

When you sign on the dotted line to accept the appointment, you know what you are in for. There is no free lunch. Or did you think there is?

I fail to see the relevance of this letter. I only see red...

Miss Geraldine, if you don't feel comfortable, just pay the $3,000 bond and move on. Do you want to be guilty for selling things that you don't feel good about?

What a lame excuse. Were you forced into accepting the job with a gun at your head? You had a choice. Every salesperson has sales targets to meet. If you did not believe in the product, don't get into selling it.

Miss Geraldine, welcome to the lack of sympathy of the ST DB.
All the usual replies from the usual posters will no doubt follow.
You gotta love them.

Instead you can do prostitution. You can earn huge dollars. And keep them all for you. How old are you?

What is the point of this letter? What are trying to say Geraldine? That such pressures give financial consultants the right to sell inappropriate products in order to meet their targets? Every profession faces pressures at work one way or another. A true professional upholds his integrity and do the right thing.

If you can't take the heat and your integrity and professionalism melts in the face of such pressures, I suggest you get out of the kitchen. You do have a choice.

Wow. This sounds exactly like a certain local bank that I interviewed for last year. Thank heavens I did not get suckered into signing on the dotted line. Geraldine, I hope you will be a wiser person for this. Fresh graduates are way too vulnerable to such ploys.
