IT'S with pride that I see the SingTel Singapore Grand Prix taking flight so brilliantly. But its success depends on how we Singaporeans conduct ourselves as hosts.
show visitors what? - that our NEA still cannot stop the chain of new clusters of mosquito-borne chikungya cases? Or that our AVA is so inept that many small shops still stock banned items because the regulator did not inform them and they depend on newspapers, tv and anonymous sms messages to know what products to withdraw? Or that on F1 days the commuters woes of long delays are ignored and that we cannot even get our public buses to come on yimer without bunching after a wait of 30 minutes - a norm rather than the exception?
Loh Sheng Hng,what a hypocrite you are. Let these foreigners see Sg naturally. Why must there be such a pretence. We are what we are. Do not behave like in the army only to spruce up and buck whenever there is a senior official coming for an inspection. These visitors is not interested at what is going on here la.
How can visitors see $ingapore at it's best when prices are hiked for every event? All I hear from toursits is "expensive" and all I hear from local colleagues is "expensive LAH"
I'm constantly amazed at the lack of pride that some of my fellow Singaporeans take in their country. To those who ask "why must we put up a show on our own land?", do you have the same attitude when someone comes to visit your own home?...do you clean it up, or leave it in a mess? Singapore is our home and it seems natural that we should make some attempt to show our best to visitors. Not just for F1, but 365 days a year. But I suppose self-respect is something that government cannot instill -- you either have it or you don't. Let's not just complain.
Show them the congestion & delay of our public transport? Show them the high $ of our cab fare? Show them ERP? Show them the high living cost? Be ourself lor, why wear a mask? nothing to show, we are not actor.
Pride? Today as I was coming to work, there was a train delay at Dhoby Ghaut at 8.26 am. Mind you, the roads around Marina and Suntec are closed and the crowd easily swelled in the span of 1 min. Each train was packed to the brim. You want me to feel pride when our public transport operators and the LTA either don't give a damn about their fellow citizens or just are too incapable of forecasting train services demand?? Please...
Sorry if I am not in syn with all your comments. I am pro-environment. To think of this big event, right from the start when all these expensive cars were specially flown in or shipped in, and more people flying in to watch this even, and all the carbon footprint that we will produce for this event (the night race make it even worse - we have to use more power to light the whole stretch of streets) - is unimaginable. We only know how to blame the Indonesian farmers when the haze was bad, but we never blame ourself for keep putting more and more CO2 into the atmosphere. Singapore - is that what we are good at?
