Ugly S'porean: 'If she, at middle age, behaved this way, how about her kids who would probably grow up emulating her?'

I REFER to an unseemly occurrence when I was at my gym in Parkway Parade being attended to by a staff member. During our conversation, we were rudely interrupted by a middle-aged woman. Oblivious to our conversation, she raised her voice insisting that she be served first or she would be late for her gym class.

Hari, I can understand your frustration after the incident. But I do hope that you have verified the nationality of the women before posting this article in the forum. For all you know she may be a PR or a foreigner.

Stand up to her and give her a earful or simply ignore her.

Agree. I've seen my fair share of ugly PRs and foreigners in S'pore. For that matter, you find ugly PRs and foreigners in other countries too. Just yesterday, I met this ugly angmoh who lives on the 12th floor. Stoooooooopid neighbour! Felt that giving her a piece of my mind.

I am quite puzzled...who decide the title of this letter? The letter writer or the ST editor responsible?

Why is it everytime when there are such complaints or letters, ST would always like to put boldly the heading "Ugly Singaporean...xxxxx"?

Does it means that only Singaporeans are exclusively capable of such ungracious acts, and all the rest of the world are gracious?

ST Forum Editor needs to be more mature and impartial in the way he or she decides on the headings of such letters!

I was in the queue to enquire about some conference arrangements in a hotel the other day, and there was this young Indian couple that rudely barged in and demanded to know how to go to a certain place...oblivious to the fact that the receptionist was attending to many others who were patiently waiting in the queue...can I say that all Indians are ugly and rude?

No, some Indians are ugly and rude and certainly have very poor upbringings, just like some Singaporeans...but it should not be generalized that Indians or Singaporeans are ugly and rude!

Were you chit chatting with the staff and oblivious to the long queue behind your? I have often been held up by long winded customers at bank counters, etc., who seem very eager to have an audience. Were you one of those By the way, are you a foreigner?

There was a Sunday Times report last year about 2 uncouth mothers at Choa Chu Kang Library who sat in the middle of the aisle, & read loudly to their children. When they were approached by a library staff & advised to go to the Reading Room, the 'disgusting duo' ganged up on the lone staff, bullying & threatening to lodge a complaint against her. For heaven's sake, she was just trying to do her job!

Based on their behaviour, there is no evidence that these women have any sort of education. The only evidence that they even went to school, is the fact that they were able to read to their children!

What kind of example were they setting to their children? The young ones will probably grown up believing that boorish & threatening behaviour, as well as the refusal to acknowledge or take responsibility for their own actions, are acceptable.

Could this be a reflection of the New Money Syndrome?

Newly rich, but arrogant and obnoxious because of her new found status. This ia a common problem worldwide, especially so in financial centres.
