This is known as price gouging. And initiated by the government-linked COMFORT-Delgro! Uniquely Singapore!

I do not understand the rationale in the surcharge. Economy is bad and yet they are trying to scare away all the customers. If they feel that there is great difficulty in going into that area. Then don't pick the customers. If that is the way to earn extra money during such events, I would propose that they have surcharge of 100 bucks instead. Why 5 bucks? Everything is raising except our salary here. Way to go, Singapore! Keep it up!!!!

#6 Dimpleguy,

You are right, sir, economy are bad. That's the reason for the surcharge, as the taxi company feels that those who consider themselves poor are not suppose to go anywhere near or around the race circuit during the event, as you should also aware that all celebration and lighting festival are also focus around the same area. there is no celebration at Lim Chu Kang Road and no surcharge for taking cab there too. This is an event to project Singapore is like Beverly Hills, there aren't no poor people around.

All guys here, mia kan cheong...it only start at 10.00 pm till midnite, no big deal actually.
X'mas and New Year countdown have seen more people demanding for taxi, but no surcharge leh.
I foresee 70% of those attending F1 will have their own transport and only 30% will use public transport, out of that maybe 5% will call for taxi.

The surcharge is basically aimed at those who go for the race "live". Anyway, the roads around there will be closed and drivers will avoid going to these areas during the race period. So, I think it will not affect the general public to great extent.
