Issue is about zoning, proper use, says MP
September 16, 2008 Tuesday, 02:48 AM

I WAS surprised by the righteous tone of The Straits Times editorial on Saturday, ('Foreign workers' housing: Act educated about it'), casting aspersions on Serangoon Gardens residents, branding them as 'supercilious, intolerant, racist, unaccommodating and smug'.
It is neither right nor reasonable to dismiss lightly the concerns of the residents especially with respect to their sense of security in a settled neighbourhood and the additional strain a workers' dormitory would put on a transportation infrastructure which is already at its limit.

With lack of GP and AP values, the complaints and dissatisfaction continue bringing more into the dark than into the light, isn't it?

What is the Cause?

What is the Solution?

This is one of the fairest letters.

Thanks to the good MP Lim Hwee Hua. Even the non-residents of SGn will appreciate her work done.

You are right, Mrs. Lim. Where are the town planners?

Please can you also write another letter to tell the other self-righteous people to stop bashing Singaporeans for not clearing their food trays in food courts, without understanding the underlying reasons why they do not? It is also about zoning and proper use.

Probably because the sense of security of foodcourt patrons is fine and the transport infrastructure within foodcourts is not stretched to the limit.

Great letter, Mrs Lim!!

As for the editorial which harshly condemned the residents with the words 'supercilious' and 'smug' among other terms, I think 'supercilious' and 'smug' apply more properly to the tone of the editorial than the residents. 'Sanctimonius' and 'self-righteous' also come to mind. And how about 'arrogant' and 'dismissive.' It is also illogical and unfair in its sweeping generalization. In general, the editorial is drivel.
See? I can be caustic and dismissive too.

what do you expect the ST to write with the likes of CLH?

As the Chinese saying goes - it and the govt breath thru the same nostrils!

Great vote winning move, Mrs LHH!

We need people like Mrs Lim Hwee Hua to speak up against the press that bashing up Singaporeans , whichever sector they may belong to,is not the right thing to do. I think the residents of Serangoon Gardens deserve an apology for being labelled with different degratory terms.

Like Mrs Lim, I am quite sure that FWs will not be housed in SG as town planners have good knowledge of Urban Geography.

Not only clearing food trays. In many other areas too. The press is controlling how Singaporeans should behave. I realise that this only happens lately. Is there any recent restructuring of the Straits Times?
