Disgusted by prejudice against those who are less well off
September 15, 2008 Monday, 07:47 AM

I READ with disgust and how much prejudice some Singaporeans have against foreigners who are less well off and are here to work as labourers to support their family back home.

A note to Eric Kuah - unless you are a resident in Serangoon Gardens, you will never know how the residents there feel about the notion of a horde of foreign workers living right at their doorsteps. If you are not, you should get off your self-righteous high horse and not cast stones at the people who live there are have cause to be concerned. As the buxom Italian blonde told the Pope when the issue of abortion came up - "you no play-a the game, you no make-a the rule"

hey guys, do you know that the place that you living at now and those shopping malls that you have visited every days are built by all these so call 'foreign workers'?

We are all children of 'foreign workers', who in this forum dare to said none of their great, grand or parents are not from foreign soils? My dad is from Malaysia and have contributed his sweat and blood to the country developement for the past 30 years.

Posting offensive comments and personal attack, does it help? Na...

Btw, fyi, I am staying at Taman Jurong and these areas are famous for foreign workers. I am worried about my family safety too but that does not mean they are always the problems creators. With or without foreign workers, there are still social problems and crimes. Like it or not, they will always be here to stay because there are jobs that no local will like to do.

So why not look on the bright side and learn how to adopt, adapt and improve the ways we live together, rather than always bring up the negative creating more social unrest.

think about it...

I think the litmus test everybody must do before writing comments from their high horses is this: Will you like to have 1,000 foreigners staying next to your estate?

I too am disgusted by the prejudice and self-righteousness shown by some Singaporeans. It is just as well that these sentiments come into the open because the government must absolutely solve this attitude problem along wit the infrastructure problem of housing FTs.

Those Serangoon Gardens residents opposed to FTs should try living in Jurong, Choa Chu Kang and Woodlands and come into more contact with FTs. They are too cocooned in their little, quiet corner of Singapore.

Eric Luah

You seem to belong to the group of self righteous Singaporeans who takes pleasure in bashing fellow Singaporeans and Singapore.

Just in case you missed reading the papaers, let me remind you that there are 5000 expatraites living in Serangoon Gardens and a large number of them had also sign the petition.

Let me also remind you that the current population of S'pore is 4.0 million out of which 1.0 million are foreingers and another 0.5 million are PRs.

You may not agree with the situation in Serangoon Gardens but be fair in your comments.

If you want to know what real dicrimination is, try living in Australia, UK, France, Spain.......

Is not discrimination, is economics...

SG folks paid premium for that area because of location, safety, quiet etc... These are hard earned money for them n they still have like 20-30yrs to pay back... is that fair for them???

Eric Luah
it is indeed heartwarming to hear like minded singaporeans here who do not share the narrow minded xenophobic mindsets like some of the readers here.

i have heard what some of stuff that came out from the serangoon garden residents forum with the ministers and i must say that there are a lot of racist overtones in them.

sausageman: eric is right and he is not being self righteous.
by the way, the way how racism here is portrayed is not very much different to our western counterparts.
I have seen the way how our bus drivers/salesgirls at our local supermarket speak to our foreign workers/maids and that is indeed disgusting to the core.

I am glad that the majority of Singaporeans are warm and gracious and they do not share the views of some of these narrow minded xenophobic individuals on this forum

MAJULAH SINGAPURAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ;)
