0.7% change in transport fares
September 12, 2008 Friday, 01:31 PM

MOST train and bus rides will cost commuters four cents more from Oct 1 onwards, said the Public Transport Council on Friday.
However, for commuters who make a transfers on their journeys, this will be offset by an increase in the transfer rebate, which will rise from the current 25 cents to 40 cents.
As a result, commuters will pay as much as seven cents less to four cents more on their entire journeys. Those who make transfers willl stand to benefit the most.

One in three commuters will have their transport bill rise by an average of $0.23 per week, while one in four commuters will face an increase of $0.18 per week.

For the remaining 41 per cent of commuters, they either pay the same or pay lesser each week.

So public transport operators gain big time yet again!! Fares continue to spike whilst service standards continue to drop.

PTC should look at unemployment rate and wage movements of S'pore citizens only in determining fares!!

As it is - the MRT is jam packed from 8-9:30am and again from 6-8pm. I don't understand why the concessions for senior citizens is extended to 7pm for weekdays. Instead, the concessions should be concentrated to weekends.

With the unsatisfactory number of trains plying the evenings - encouraging senior citizens to travel during peak hours is exposing them to more danger, as the sg society as we know it has not quite proven to be gracious enough to give up their seats for senior citizens. Neither has the senior citizens been themselves, gracious enough to encourage (young) children under their care to give up their seats for pregnant ladies or fellow senior citizens. With standing space only in the trains at these hours and insufficient support structures to cling to.. not clear why this is a good move.

Furthermore despite all the talk by SMRT about going green - their lack of consideration for overall average customer experience is driving customers to go for non-green alternatives. Seems to me that the trains, while are scheduled to give maximum return on shareholder value via cost efficiency is at the different side of the same coin calculated to maximise passenger discomfort.

Telling us to ditch cars for public transport but on the other hand poke us by raising transport charges. Why not cut cost by removing TV mobile? Use more non-air con buses? More transfer rebates does not really benefit as most people prefer direct trips.

It seems like there are more and more people taking public transport nowadays but why still raise the fare? Don't tell us that it's because of the oil price?

interesting that they specified how much they lose ($30mil) by increasing the transfer rebate, but never say how much they earn when the 59% pay extra.

you see, you see!

doesn't take long to increase the fares, eventhough people has been pack up to ceilings of each of the carriages during peak hours, as well as during weekends.

where is the compassionate? how can you expect people to be gracious if the system doesn't encouraging you to be one automatically? more like encouraging you to be a good physical pusher so that you can have some personal space when you're commuting those bl0*dy so-called friendly public transportation!
