September 04, 2008 Thursday, 04:10 AM
FOR some time now, Serangoon Gardens resident Kelvin - he did not want his full name used - has been trying to find housing for his firm's foreign workers, with little luck.

As ex-student of SGT school, I know that the school is not suitable for dorm because of security, that u can do many things once inside. SGT is a world of its own, protected by large grassland and CTE at back with front only single 1 lane road with low semi-detach houses. So no one can see inside, and nearest police post is far away and can easily be blocked. There is also "short cuts" at the old rifle range to Tai Wan Heights or tennis court or escape route through the large drain behind. Since it is one-way, so when going out no choice must "visit" half the neighborhood. Lastly, it can be also a good hideout from Ang Mo Kio Ave 10 which is just a bridge away to SGT.
So I would highly not recommend using SGT as dorm or Singapore will lose Serangoon Gardens forever and may even create a Getto in the heartlands.

Let's build the dormitory next to Mah BT's house. He previously asked S'poreans to be more accommodative towards foreign workers. This is a good chance for him to show us how he does it!!

Security aside, let's us all be honest - people and ministers alike. Which one among us - private or HDB resident - want to have foreign workers, not talents, living among us? Dwindling property price, insecurity, etc. It's time that we called a spade a spade. I do not live in the affected area nor has my home encountered such problem (fortunately and I hope it stayed that way) but I share the residents' pain if this went ahead. While the governnment seeks the residents' understanding on this matter, I would ask the government to understand the impending problems the residents will encounter ahead. If my MP does not fight for my rights and privileges on such crucical matters affecting my home, he/she can be assured of losing my vote!

As much as I appreciate the foreign workers' contributions to Singapore, I would not want them living in dorms in my estate, which, unfortunately is the case now! Reasons are, they get drunk and fall asleep anywhere (not the dorm), they litter everywhere, they hook up with maids (or vise versa), etc. Basically, they pose a security threat to the neighbourhood. Sorry to say that, but incidents have indeed happened. A specific area should be dedicated to workers' dormitories but definitely not within residential neighbourhoods please!

I don't understand why I'm such a cynical idiot, to me, this issue sounds so wayang.
Just like the STTA issue, who was the first to initiate the unhappiness or uproar!
Maybe it was a political plot to show us citizens, especially Serangoon Garden residents, that PAP MPs indeed have and work for the interest of their wards residents.
Me only have one question, why communication or consultation wasn't initiated between interested parties (MOM, MPs and residents) first, then announced the plan to house foreign workers in SGT after all concerns (social and/or security) of interested parties have been adequately looked into and addressed to?
In any case, may I suggest that if a dorm need to be build to house FWs, why not in Mount Vernon, next to the crematorium/cemetaries and furthermore there is a Gurkhas battlion nearby to provide instant rectification of security issues problems if the needs arises.

Better still, build the dorm within the Gurkhas battlion, then the Gurkhas guards can enforce their kind of discipline to all those FWs staying within the compound, example must book in by 2359hrs, no gambling no prostitution hanky panky allowed in the compound, no loitering outside compound.
Offenders will be dealt with by military rules and laws. :)
