With his kind of wealth, a fine of S$10,000 is really a joke to him. As for the 1-day jail, its just a wayang. Fair enough if he is too sick to be jailed, but should make him donate his fortune to charities in exchange for his jail term. This will go to show that got money doesn't mean he can do anything he likes.

What is human judgement?

What is Divine judgement?

Discern the difference.

A pimp diagnosed with terminal lung cancer got 4 months for corruption. This wealthy man got ONE day and pittance fine. I wish to ask if everyone is equal before the law? Tell me la.

Would the jail term be 1 day if the defendant was just a heartlander?????

A precedent has been set in our Court.

"He noted, however, that Tang had acted out of desperation, believing he was likely to die without a kidney transplant. "

So the poor man who sold his kidney did it for fun?

The poor gets jailed, the rich gets away......

Seriously, what if you guys are in his shoe, with money to buy kidney and will die if you dont, will you not do it?

Yes, the sentence seems biased as compare to the middle-man and the "donor"... but the government policy towards organ trading has softened since the two sentencing... so maybe he got a lucky break on this...

Lying under Oath looks to be a rather non-event under the Singapore Judiciary. Look at how MM Lee and Tang both escaped with little or no consequence. Or is there an unwritten relation in Singapore between one's net assets and his legal liability?

Contrast Tang's "jail" sentence with another terminally-ill man (see report below). Straits Times reported that Tang was jailed just 2 hours!!!

Kidney seller got 2 weeks jail. The judge presiding over Tang's case cited Tang's "desperation" as a mitigating factor. But isn't the seller (who is a very poor Indonesian) much more desperate? I don't know what the judge thinks, but selling your own organ is the ultimate in desperation to me!!

Does S'pore law favour the very rich or powerful?

Terminally-ill man jailed
The Straits Times

SUFFERING from terminal lung cancer, Heng Wa Seng, 58, will have to spend some of the little time he has to live in jail.

He was jailed for four months for corruption on Wednesday.

The unemployed man will serve an additional three months behind bars as he was unable to pay the $12,000 fine imposed on him on 11 counts of operating unlicensed massage parlours and employing a Chinese national illegally.

He had also committed 38 similar offences.

The jail term was backdated to July 1 - the date he was remanded.

District Judge Chia Wee Kiat heard that Heng is suffering from advanced lung cancer that doctors say is incurable.

The court was not told how long he is expected to live, only that he is presently undergoing chemotherapy treatment at the National Cancer Centre.
