Anti-government grouses on Internet sometimes too much
August 15, 2008 Friday, 08:33 AM
WHENEVER I surf the Internet on the latest updates on Singapore, I never fail to come across negative posts from Singaporeans criticising the Government for implementing new policies, from setting up the integrated resorts to Electronic Road Pricing and even the amount of money the Government will pay Olympic gold medallists.

So, Mr Jonathan, being superiorly educated and well travelled, is telling all Singaporeans to shut up and be contented. Don't complain about the minister's big pay rise, and the ERP ring around the ring, the high cost of living, GST increase, utility increases, transport increase, lack of creativity in the education system, lack of freedom of speech, the influx of FTs in our workplace and Olympics, how a driver can walk free after test driving a car and killing someone, how mr durai can walk and travel freely still owing millions to the state while Ms Chee can't. Yes, we got to shut our minds to all these and start to think like him.

wah. the writer totally avoided mentioned if he thinks those 'negative posts' are valid or not. Is that not relevant?
Just look at the latest interview with LKY, which he comments on Singaporeans preference for multi-party politics. You noticed he never mentions about Singaporeans? Only about the economy. How it will subside in 3-4 years if a 'Division 3' govts is voted in. Nothing about citizens whatsoever. THAT is the perspective of the govt.
Is it a wonder why people posts negatively about a govt that does NOT care about them?

Well done, Jonathan Quek ....... I salute you for having the guts to put your thoughts clearly.
I am unemployed and also have some grouses against some policies. However, on the balance the nation has done relatively well when compared to neighbouring countries.
To those who constantly criticised the government ... how about some constructive in-depth contribution on the relevant issues. Better still why not work harder to get into position where you make things happen rather than complaining all the time.

Strange, seeing how Jonathan, who claims to be working in South Korea, talks about "listening to how other nationalities magnify their achievements and how great their country is."
He obscures the fact that South Koreans DO MORE than just grouse at their government. When they do have grouses, as we've seen on TV, they also like to gather in large groups, throw rocks and bottles and whatever else comes to hand, at their riot police, who will then retaliate with water cannons and tear gas...
Compared to the above, I think Singaporeans' grouses are just fine, thank you.
Jonathan has rightly confused patriotism - being proud of your country's and coutrymen's achievements - with support for the government. These two very different things are often mixed up in Singapore...

I am sorry, Mr Jonathan. I don't work in the South Korea and have never worked there for 8 months and I'm not educated in the British Uni you attended.
What I care most is my survival in this ever cost-increasing country. Perhaps when I earn as much as you do or when I'm rich enuf, I will think like you do. So, in the meantime, pls take a seat back and empathise with the ppl on the ground.
We gave credits when it's due and nobody is denying that LKY and his gang did a great job to bring S'pore to what it is today. (in case if you've missed the NDP all these yrs, let me gently informed you that we're being constanly reminded how S'pore get to where she is today thanks to the footages shown on NDP). What we're complaining (i would like to use the word feedback though but our ministers think that feedbacks are complains you see and they say when they attend the meet-the-ppl sessions, they hear too much complains when what we're trying to do is just to make the area we live in a much better place for all and i don't deny that there might be blacksheeps sometimes) is that the ministers have lost touch with the ppl.
So, you think as a parent you can restrict your child this and that without knowing what your child is like and claims that you're doing this for his own good? Mind you, generations are changing. What methods your parents used to discipline you might worked on you but not your children.

Jonathan,
Aren't you just frying yesterday's fried rice?? The same old "no natural resources" blah blah blah have been used by our mini-stars so many times to "justify" their" achievements that people are so sick of them.
What our mini-stars don't emphasize is that S'pore benefits immensely from having a strategic location for air and sea ports. S'poer also benefits a lot from being close to quasi hinterland such as Indonesia and M'sia.
Our senior civil servants must realize that they don't always have the right solutions......that their policies might not always be right!
