I REFER to last Saturday's commentary by Ms Chua Lee Hoong, 'Why they hate Singapore'. Singaporeans celebrated National Day last Saturday and deserve the world's congratulations.
you don't think it is coincidental this article came out after the IBA (some international lawyers' association) came out a report slamming Spore? Then we were told the West is jealous of us that China and Russia are learning our `not-so-democratic' ways. Then followed Ms Chua's article about `why they hate Spore?'
If the world does not dislike Singapore, how nowadays it seems that no countries sent in their congratulations to Singapore during our National Day anymore?
What's this got to do with sg govt being childish & insecure? First of all, sg govt didnt initiate this debate, this nonsense was started by some smart-*** foreigners. So plz get your facts straight or you're just like these ignorant ppl.
Foreigners and singaporeans alike need to know that alternative ways of doing things are many, we all need to learn from one another to improve our own welfare or the welfare of the ppl. On the other hand, if we just think we're good enough & being complacent & demand to have easier life then just dont complain abt any consequences.
I feel that we should be contented with what we have in Singapore.
Do we wake up every morning and be grateful that we have a roof over our heads and feel proud that ~92% of Singaporeans own their own property? Do we realize that we can afford cheap and good quality hawker food and occasionally, dine in nice restaurants? Do we think about how safe Singapore is in comparison with the stabbing sprees/ gruesome murders we often hear about in other countries? I guess not... Because we are too comfortable in our own country and at times, we take things for granted. And yes, the 'grass is always greener on the other side'.
No country is perfect. If there is one, it would be heaven.
So have a think about it. Are the lack of 'freedom of speech', numerous laws and several unfavorable government policies enough for us to pass judgement on Singapore as a 'dis-likable' country? I certainly do not think so. We are definately not one of the worse on this planet.
#6, excellent point about learning and improving, I really agree.
I'd just like to point out that the government did in part fuel this debate. After the IBA and John Kampfner were featured in the ST highlighting the lack of liberal democratic elements in Singaporean politics, MM Lee initiated, I believe, if not fuelled, the 'they're jealous' rhetoric in a speech he made, which has soon come to be taken up by both ST journalists and forum writers.
The fact that Bruno Serrien has to write to rebutt Ms Chua's is a testimony there are elements of truth in her article. Western-style democracy and their liberal policy are literally going down the shithole.
