Get this boy to promise that he will serve in a combat vocation in return for the few months of delay.

Its a very small saim. I am talking about those who hunt for a medical reason to siam combat duties. These are far more big time saimers.

Seem like a lot of young people are resorting to this stunt. And with more affluent parents, more are pulling this stunt. I see a lot of my neighbours and 'friends' pulling this stunt for their kids and about my son's friends doing the same.

Bloody shame, For your info, me, my brother's sons and my sons are all combat soldiers. That makes 8. We all hold low ranks ranks but are ^%$king proud about being combat soldiers.

I also wonder why a young man who breaks an arm or a leg cannot be full cured/ healed so that he becomes combat fit again. Some neighbour's kid broke an arm and then was immediately posted to a non combat vocation.

SAF, go after these big siamers and reconsider this boy's small request leh!

Besides student reading medicine at NUS, most of us served our NS liability before going on to the varsities. You will be more matured to pursue your tertiary education.

Be brave boy,NS turned a boy into a man.

Hi silaterangy, thanks for your support, i am a close fren of samuel and he is combat fit pes a you know and will be going in mono intake next mth, 30 sce combat fit man like you and the rest.

I think his is one of the many sad cases in Singapore, our NS system is getting a bit too outdated, they always talk abt flexibility but in the end its all take and no action.

Then i kind of think why should students doing medical be any special is it because they are the smartest of the lot and they are given "special" flexibility and be allowed to study first then go NS. I think if no deferment is granted then no one including "medical student" should be granted a delay in army, we must have a system that is fair to everyone.

If medical students can be granted a deferment for their medical studies then i do not see any reason why my fren samuel cannot even be granted 3 mths delay to finish his first yr. Is this a fair system? Sad to say guess not.

Maybe SeenItAll is correct, this might be why so many Singaporeans are migrating overseas.

WinRenGoo.

Congrats to your friend for not squirming out of being a combat soldier.

I find it very sad that nowadays, when a young man manages to siam or chaokeng to get into non combat vocation, they celebrate.

During my time, we call them 'Nng Kar Peng' or soft legged soldiers and they damn 'pai seh' about it. What is happening to the young people nowadays?

I wonder why the SAF does not seem to give greater and more visible honour to the combat soldier even if he is a private. I don't know about now but during my time, the combat soldier gets no 'vocation pay' but some Nng Kar Peng were given, Damn irony. Dying first is not a vocation! Combat soldiers are the ones who will go first and die first, doesn't the SAF knows?

Samuel Tan's parents are one of those opportunist Singaporeans who will go to great extremes to get their sons downgraded or siam NS. Shame on you - you are a disgrace to Singapore. You still have the cheek to appeal - shameless and downright dispicable.

Nothing wrong with MINDEF to reject the requst for deferment. They already know that Samuel has to be enlisted at age 18 but they chose to continue with his Uni study instead. So they must be prepared for this outcome.

Medical students get to complete their studies before being enlisted because they are in the very specialized field. Most of them graduated to become Medical Officers while serving their NS. Surely you do not expect a JC science student to examine you and assigning medicines for your fever and cold???

Sometime I do hate NS but when it comes to this case, we have to be clear minded.

I don't see any harm by a 3 months delay. Why are the authorities making it so hard? The reason is there, to take up his examination or finish up his studies. Isn't it a futile effort studying so hard but a mere delay of 3 months is not granted? This will disheartened more and more Singapore boys to strive in educations and lead to us ""'needing'"" foreign talents???

Thanks right, think SAF only look for bright people who can be officers or segerants but come to war its the ground troops that win the battle ground troops like us combat people

U didn't shoot straight. My friend Samuel is only asking to delay enlistment by 3-months so that he could complete his 1st year exam and not siam NS. So read carefully before you shoot, some more Singapore is trying to get all our young people to be uni grad and help fill up positions in R&D. If you are a parent then you should very well understand this fact.

Years ago sec 4 or poly and we can get a good job, now even a taxi driver needs to have a good command of english, then look at this are we all being opportunist? I guess not we are being driven to such a extent due to Singapore Competitiveness.

Skinners,
Well you are right and wrong in saying Medical Students are the special lot, true they are in a specialized field but then this does not give them a special advantage as compare to all other Singaporeans, are we becoming a Country that look at talent or how smart we are? We build a country base on a fair system for each and every Singaporeans, if the idea that deferment can be granted for medical students because they are in a specialize field then this fair system has some faults already because it is downright "UNFAIR" as if not deferment is granted then it must be fair to say this applies to Each and Every Singaporeans regardless of their Field of Studies.

Enikisser,
Thats true 3 months only and they are making it so hard, guess this must be why we need to bring in so many foreign talents.
