*** Why they hate Singapore
August 09, 2008 Saturday, 10:48 AM
SINGAPORE is small enough to be a suburb in Beijing, but it has something in common with the mammoth People's Republic. The little red dot and Red China are both countries the West loves to hate.

"The real sin: Singapore and China are examples of countries which are taking a different route to development, and look to be succeeding. "
I think the situation in China is more complicated than Singapore. The population in China is larger and corruption is a serious problem there. In case the writer hasn't noticed, the West has been criticising China even before it 'looks like it is succeeding'. So, I really don't think it is because of your statement there.
Economic success can be achieved even if a country has a benevolent monarchy. In that sense, a country run by a monarchy could bring about economic success too, as I am sure you can find many historical examples, including the flourishing of the Silk Route under certain Chinese emperors. So, there is nothing to 'wow' about if an authoritarian system brings about economic success.

They chop heads or give them a bullet in the head in China, isn't it?
Can they clean up the corruption mess?
If the head is unclean, if the soul is unclean, it will pollute the Mind, then the body, isn't it in that order of sequence?
It flows down to , RWYS.

In life we cannot expect everything to be fair.
Ideal is good but to be disecnhanted with reality is fatal.
Singapore bulid it's success upon solid and rigid rules.
This argument is coherent as we have to sacrifice somethings to achieve stability.

Corruption is a serious problem in the West too. Just that it has been 'legalised' under what is known as porkbarrel politics.
Economic success in the past was not due to having benevolent monarchy. More to their ability to exploit militarily weaker states. The Roman and British empires are good examples.

They chop hands and heads in the Middle East too. However, the West are not going to squeam over it cause they have oil which they can exploited unlike China which is viewed as a serious competitor.

why use the word 'hate" ...esp on national day... make us very defensive... kind of like fostering siege mentality... who does the reporter mean by 'they" ... surely not all westerners are against our style of government... in fact many endorse it. Just because some people have a different opinion of government it does not mean they hate singapore...........

This conspiracy theory is just a lousy excuse when MIW is faced with criticism from foreign countries. I still fail to see why for example, the US, would fear S'pore. That's just MIW's and The Straist Times' propaganda.

It isn't the "west" that hates China and Singapore.
The "west" is comprised of so many different types of people, liberals, conservatives, leftwingers, rightwingers, environmentalists, gays, animal rights activists, religious fundamentalists, hollywood celebrities, etc.....
Those who criticise China and Singapore in america are mainly the leftwing liberals and democrats. The conservatives and republicans generally try to get along with us and actually approve of the conservative elements in our societies, like strong families, a conservative sexual morality, more deserving punishments for violent criminals and the death penalty.
It was Nixon from the republicans that officially recognised China as a country in the past, whereas the democrats are supported by taiwanese money and also started the vietnam war against china, and of course lost it, but not before killing millions of vietnamese civilians and sending 60,000 of their own young american soldiers to their deaths for no benefit whatsoever. And hundreds of thousands more young american soldiers got maimed for life.
Th democrat party fell from political power after that and naturally there is no love between them and china.
The leftwing NYT, that has been so busily condemning the Iraq war(that is basically a success for the US), actually called the Vietnam war a "brilliant idea" and supported it heavily until more and more US soldiers got killed.
It's like a man who gambled in risky investments and lost all his money due to his stupidity, later telling other investors, "investment will never work and you will die, because I lost everything myself".
There are lots of westerners and americans that like singapore and china. But we don't hera about them because the media we get here is mainly leftwing that is against china and the PAP. The ST takes articles from Reuters, NYT, these are all leftwing media orgs. Of course the ST does not dare go against the PAP, but in all other things it is as leftwing as the NYT.
Understand the west and understand the bias of the media and you will then have a clarity of vision that will benefit you for life.
